Wait a minute! A musical? Well, for many years I stayed away from this genre, a victim of the tendency to think that they are cheesy, boring, monotonous, etc. But in more recent times I started to give it a chance in my list of movies to watch. I have seen that it is enriching to enjoy the good references of this genre. The versatility of the actors is evident, plus it gives you criteria within the wide range of options in the cinema, now from home. That's why I want to talk to you today about La La Land.

Commenting on this film I realized how divided people are about it. Some liked it a lot, others liked it a little. Some found it to have a positive message, others found it a sad musical. If you haven't seen it, it deserves your attention. And I'm sorry to tell you that this post contains spoilers. If you have seen it, you may be on one of the pro or con teams. Here I tell you what my opinion is, and also my three favorite lines from the movie.

¡Un momento! ¿Un musical? Bueno, por muchos años no me acerqué a éste género, víctima de la tendencia de pensamiento de que son cursis, aburridos, monótonos, etc. Pero ya en tiempos más recientes empecé a darle una oportunidad en mi lista de películas por ver. He visto que es enriquecedor disfrutar de las buenas referencias de éste género. La versatilidad de los actores es patente, además que te aporta criterio dentro de la amplia gama de opciones en el cine, ahora desde casa. Por eso, quiero hablarles hoy de La La Land.

Al comentar sobre éste film me di cuenta de lo dividido que están las personas respecto a ella. A unos le gustó mucho, a otros les gustó poco. A unos les resultó tener un positivo mensaje, a otros les pareció un musical triste. Si no la has visto, merece tu atención. Y lamento decirte que éste post contiene spoilers. Si la viste, es posible que estés en alguno de los equipos que están a favor o en contra de ella. Aquí te cuento cuál es mi opinión, y también mis tres frases favoritas de la película.

During the winter season, the struggles of each main character are shown, in order to get to know them and somehow achieve empathy. Life sometimes becomes cold, difficult and insensitive for some. And at this stage we get to know them both.

Him. Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a pianist who seeks to promote jazz in its most traditional form. He knows the challenge of pursuing a career as a musician and becoming famous. He has his opinion on what brings and steals the city of Los Angeles. He seems to have his goal clear in his mind, knows what he wants, and in the meantime, is willing to take menial jobs while he waits to materialize his goal.

Her. Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring celebrity actress who eagerly takes every audition she can get her hands on for an important role that will lead her to fame. She strives, hopes, dreams? And she also has her opinion of what the city of Los Angeles can help her, and in turn, what she herself can do for her city. At the same time, she works in a coffee shop, where every visit from celebrities presses the "PLAY" key of her dreams.

Durante la estación de invierno se muestra las luchas que tiene cada personaje principal, con el fin de conocerlos y de alguna forma lograr empatía. La vida a veces se torna fría, difícil e insensible para algunos. Y en ésta etapa los conocemos a ambos.

Él. Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), un pianista que busca promover el jazz en su forma más tradicional. Conoce el reto de emprender una carrera como músico y llegar a ser famoso. Tiene su opinión sobre lo que aporta y roba la ciudad de Los Angeles. Parece tener su objetivo claro en la mente, sabe lo que quiere, y mientras tanto, está dispuesto a aceptar trabajos de baja categoría mientras espera materializar su meta.

Ella. Mia (Emma Stone), una aspirante a actriz famosa quien con ilusión no desaprovecha ninguna audición que esté a su alcance para optar por un papel importante que la lleve a la fama. Se esfuerza, ilusiona, sueña... Y también tiene su opinión de lo que la ciudad de Los Angeles puede ayudarla, y a su vez, lo que ella misma puede hacer por su ciudad. A su vez, trabaja en una cafetería, donde cada visita de los famosos oprime la tecla "PLAY" de sus sueños

That first winter, along with the spring and summer that follow, make up the first part of the film. Spring shows how love blossoms between them. And during the summer, the temperature of their love rises to the maximum, making them (and the viewer too) believe that it is possible to have both: a successful career in the artistic world and a true and lasting love. The parallel stories are barely noticeable, and very straightforward, so we can more easily focus on what happens to both of them. That exclusive focus doesn't bother. Then comes the scene that splits the film in two.

Already in the fall, in the middle of the tour of the band Sebastian belongs to, he returns home and prepares a surprise dinner for Mia. She does not hesitate to show him that she feels lonely and at the same time worried about him, who seems to see him imprisoned by a contract that forces him to play music he does not really like. But Sebastian's success is enough for him to put his career above Mia's, who in two weeks will have her play that she has been working on for months. The selfishness in his words are so notorious that he can almost be seen personified sitting in a chair next to her, and she senses it, although she tried for a few seconds to erase it, but she could not. It is when their love begins to darken, just as the leaves on the trees dry up, change to earth colors and blend with her as they fall to the ground. Realism has punched them right in the pit of the stomach. Can you succeed in life as a couple while pursuing your individual dreams? Winter arrives again, and brings with it the climax of the film, but we'll get to that later.

Ése primer invierno, junto con la primavera y verano que le siguen, componen la primera parte de la película. La primavera muestra como florece el amor entre ellos. Y durante el verano, la temperatura de su amor sube al máximo, haciéndoles creer (y al espectador también) que se puede tener ambas cosas: una carrera exitosa en el mundo artístico y un amor verdadero y duradero. Las historias paralelas apenas se notan, y son muy sencillas, por lo que podemos enfocarnos más fácilmente en lo que les ocurre a ambos. Ése foco exclusivo no molesta. Luego, viene la escena que parte la película en dos.

Ya en el otoño, en plena gira de la banda a la que pertenece Sebastian, él retorna a casa y prepara una cena sorpresa para Mia. Ella no duda en mostrarle que se siente sola y a la vez preocupada por él, quien parece verlo preso de un contrato que lo obliga a tocar música que realmente no le gusta. Pero el éxito que ha tenido Sebastian es suficiente como para que en esa conversación ponga su carrera por encima de la de Mia, quien en dos semanas tendrá su obra de teatro con la que lleva meses trabajando. El egoísmo en las palabras de él son tan notorias que casi puede verse personificado sentado en una silla a su lado, y ella lo percibe, aunque trató durante algunos segundos de borrarlo, pero no pudo. Es cuando su amor empieza a oscurecerse, tal como las hojas de los árboles se secan, cambian a colores tierra y se combinan con ella al caer al suelo. El realismo les ha dado un derechazo en la boca del estomago. ¿Se puede tener éxito en la vida de pareja a la vez que se persiguen los sueños individuales? El invierno llega de nuevo, y trae consigo el clímax de la película, pero lo abordaremos más adelante.

Here is one of the aspects I liked: the realism present. Show business is not usually a bed of roses, and some features often leave you with serious frustrations and disappointments. You have to be serious about finishing what you start in order to pick yourself up and move on, fighting and hoping for another chance. Also, it doesn't take much success for someone to change and become selfishly inclined (mind you, it doesn't happen to everyone, but it does happen more often than we would like). During the summer you were both enthusiastically supportive of each other, but it stopped being that way, sadly. And how much of yourself should you invest to achieve your personal goal, while at the same time selflessly supporting each other's goal, and simultaneously making your relationship stronger? Really? If you didn't sit down and weigh all of this?

Now, I notice that some people put their lowest marks for the film on, for example, Gosling's faint-heartedness and lack of spark in his role, leading some to opine that there is a lack of chemistry between the lead couple. Still, I think he could be part of that role, because maybe that's how a man who has tasted the sweet, the tasteless, the bitter and the bitterest of the musical career could be seen. His dreams and illusions, which Mia once had, are tempered with truth and objectivity, making expectations not so high. Pusillanimous? I would say realistic.

Well, no one is arguing that the film is well made. The symmetry in various shots really are a delight. They leave you with so much to see. Like when they come out of the cafeteria, walk and are stopped because they will be filming a movie scene nearby. Or those where they show the facade of the theater rented for Mia's play. Although there is no song that stands out from the rest in such an evident way, all of them are of a very good quality, both in composition and lyrics, capable of enriching the story and telling you the feelings involved in that part of the story. Particularly, from the first time I saw the movie, the chords of "Mia & Sebastian's Theme" were like arrows piercing my body. The piano notes in "City of stars" feed the sadness and frustration vibe, while feeding the dreams and positivity.

He aquí uno de los aspectos que me gustaron: El realismo presente. El mundo del espectáculo no suele ser un camino de rosas, y algunos rasgos suelen dejarte serias frustraciones y sinsabores. Debes querer en serio lograr terminar lo que empiezas para así reponerte y seguir adelante, luchando y esperando otra oportunidad. También, no se necesita mucho éxito para que alguien cambie y se vuelva una persona con tendencia egoísta (ojo, no le sucede a todos, pero sí pasa más frecuente de lo que desearíamos). Durante el verano ambos se apoyaban con ilusión, pero dejó de ser así, tristemente. Y ¿cuanto de ti debes invertir para alcanzar tu meta personal, a la misma vez que apoyas desinteresadamente la meta del otro, y simultáneamente haces que tu relación de pareja se fortalezca? ¿En serio? Si no te sentaste a sopesar todo esto...

Ahora bien, noto que algunos ponen sus calificaciones más bajas del largometraje en, por ejemplo, lo pusilánime y falto de chispa que tuvo Gosling en su papel, haciendo que algunos hasta opinen falta de química entre la pareja protagonista. Con todo, pienso que podría ser parte de ése papel, porque quizás así podría verse un hombre que ha probado lo dulce, lo insípido, lo amargo y lo más amargo de la carrera musical. Sus sueños e ilusiones, que en un tiempo tuvo Mia, son templados con la verdad y la objetividad, haciendo que las expectativas no sean tan altas. ¿Pusilánime? Yo diría realista.

Bueno, nadie discute que la película está bien hecha. La simetría en varias tomas realmente son un deleite. Te dejan tanto para ver. Como cuando salen de la cafetería, caminan y son detenidos porque filmarán cerca una escena de una película. O esas donde muestran la fachada del teatro alquilado para la obra de Mia. Aunque no hay una canción que sobresalga sobre el resto de forma tan evidente, todas son de una muy buena calidad, tanto en composición como en letra, capaces de enriquecer la historia y decirte los sentimientos implicados en ésa parte de la historia. Particularmente, desde la primera vez que vi la película, los acordes de "Mia & Sebastian's Theme" fueron como flechas que me traspasaban el cuerpo. Las notas del piano en "City of stars" dan de comer a la onda tristeza y frustración, a la vez que alimentan a los sueños y positivismo.

The detail of Sebastian's hands playing the piano really struck me as a separate story, as I dedicate a separate paragraph to it here. The first time "Mia & Sebastian's Theme" plays, he plays the piano with both hands, though he gives it an abrupt ending. Midway through the film, when Mia goes to see him play live for the first time with her friend's band, she doesn't like the way they sound, knowing that it doesn't sound like what Sebastian really wanted to play. You can see on her face that she doesn't agree with the band's sound and genre. And that's when he plays the electronic piano with only his right hand. Meanwhile, the left hand was kept apathetically inside his trouser pocket, only willing to play the traditional piano, as indeed he did skillfully in the parts assigned for it. In my opinion, the left hand represents her, and the fact that she does not use it to generate the electronic sound in the concert represents Mia's obvious disagreement with it. And at the end, when he is left without her, who inadvertently visits him accompanied by her current husband, he starts playing "Mia & Sebastian's Theme" again with only his right hand, perhaps reflecting a lonely start in his life and career. It seems that the song is not sure to be presented for that moment. Then he adds the left hand and they both begin to tell us a story using the chords we have been hearing throughout the film, harmonically, intensely, joyfully, fully and ideally. But in the end, he ends up playing it the same way he started it: only with the right hand. It slows down and sounds even sadder. He is left without her. He chose his professional career and a life without his true love. His life would continue to "sound" like this, only with what he is able to generate with one hand. Masterful.

El detalle de las manos de Sebastian al tocar el piano realmente me pareció una historia aparte, tal como le dedico un párrafo aparte aquí. La primera vez que suena "Mia & Sebastian's Theme", él toca el piano con ambas manos, aunque le da un final abrupto. A mitad de película, cuando Mia va a verlo tocar por primera vez en vivo con la banda de su amigo, a ella no le gusta cómo suenan, sabiendo que no se parece a lo que realmente quería tocar Sebastian. En su rostro puede verse que no está de acuerdo con el sonido y género de la banda. Y es cuando él toca el piano electrónico sólo con la mano derecha. Mientras tanto, la mano izquierda se guardaba con apatía dentro del bolsillo del pantalón, sólo dispuesta a tocar el piano tradicional, como de hecho lo hizo con destreza en las partes asignadas para ello. En mi opinión, la mano izquierda la representa a ella, y el hecho de que no la usa para generar el sonido electrónico en el concierto, representa el evidente desacuerdo de Mia a éste respecto. Y al final, cuando se queda sin ella, quien lo visita sin querer acompañado de su actual esposo, empieza a tocar de nuevo "Mia & Sebastian's Theme" sólo con su mano derecha, reflejando quizás un inicio solitario en su vida y carrera. Parece que la canción no está segura de presentarse para ése momento. Luego agrega la mano izquierda y ambas empiezan a relatarnos una historia utilizando los acordes que hemos venido escuchando durante toda la película, de forma armónica, intensa, alegre, completa e ideal. Pero al final, él la termina tocando de la misma forma que la empezó: sólo con la mano derecha. Baja la velocidad y suena aún más triste. Él se quedó sin ella. Eligió su carrera profesional y una vida sin su verdadero amor. Su vida seguiría "sonando" así, sólo con lo que sea capaz de generar con una sola mano. Magistral.

And we come to the opinion that I consider most important: Is it a happy or a sad musical? How do you feel at the end of the movie? The team of the happy ones put the capital letters in the first part, in those scenes with a very luminous color palette, with pure colors in the costumes that bombard the screen with euphoria, optimism, love, illusion? The music enhances the happiness that interprets the view. Those scenes between both protagonists that seem extracted from a fairy tale, with enough duration to really make you believe that, enjoy it, imagine that you are the one in those crisp clothes doing those dance steps so aesthetically. Reason why you smile, sheltered by the darkness of the room, which gives you the assurance that no one is watching you. You can see how, individually, Sebastian and Mia gain ground in trying to achieve their goal, sending you a clear message that you can achieve your dreams with tenacity, dedication and perseverance. But it's not all like that. The sad team suggests that the film shows that romantic love is not above all else. The sad nuances are also seen as supporting actors in the first part, but protagonists in the second. I loved how the light was used for this in some scenes, turning them off all over the set and a single spotlight is who survived to indicate where to look, what to feel.... Classic. The chords of the songs make the sadness bigger in your chest, at least in mine. So, is it a happy or a sad musical? Before we answer, let's talk about the ending.

Y llegamos a la opinión que considero más importante. ¿Es un musical alegre o triste? Cómo te sientes al final de la película... El equipo de los alegres ponen las mayúsculas en la primera parte, en ésas escenas con una paleta de colores muy luminosa, con colores puros en los vestuarios que bombardean la pantalla de euforia, optimismo, amor, ilusión... La música potencia la felicidad que interpreta la vista. Esas escenas entre ambos protagonistas que parecen extraídas de un cuento de hadas, con una duración suficiente para realmente hacerte creer eso, disfrutarlo, imaginarte que eres tu el que está con esa ropa nítida haciendo esos pasos de baile tan estéticamente. Razón por la que sonríes, amparado con la oscuridad de la sala, la cual te da la seguridad de que nadie te está viendo. Puedes ver cómo, de manera individual, Sebastian y Mia ganan terreno en tratar de alcanzar su cometido, enviándote un claro mensaje de que se puede alcanzar los sueños con tesón, esmero y perseverancia. Pero no todo es así. El equipo de los tristes sugieren de que la película muestra de que el amor romántico no está por encima de todo. Los matices tristes también los vemos como actores de reparto en la primera parte, pero protagonistas en la segunda. Me encantó cómo se usó la luz para esto en algunas escenas, apagándolas en todo el set y un solo foco es quien sobrevivía para indicar dónde mirar, qué sentir... Clásico. Los acordes de las canciones hacen de que la tristeza sea más grande en tu pecho, al menos en el mío. Así que, ¿es un musical alegre o triste? Antes de responder, hablemos del final.

Set in the second winter season, it shows an open ending. For those of you wondering "What would have happened if...?" Well, they leave nothing to your imagination: they show you what happened and what you might wish had happened; the real versus the ideal; the good versus the better.... They seem to be giving you the opportunity to choose the ending you like the most.

So, is it a happy or sad musical? I think it depends on what your emotional state is at the time you see it. If you're on a good run in life and everything seems to be going well for you, your heart will surely race with joy at the overflowing desire to achieve the dreams of the people you see on screen, you'll smile at the good things happening to them, you'll be quickly won over by the words of encouragement from Mia's friends and you'll share the feeling of accomplishment as they both progress in their careers. But if you think you're not doing so well in life, you'll be sensitive to what happens to the protagonists individually, to the discouragements they have, you'll feel in your heart the effort they make to combat discouragement and negativism, and you'll share the realistic approach they often show. If you're courting someone else, it won't be hard to imagine yourself substituting their faces for yours and your partner's in the happier, more romantic scenes. But if you're not at a good point in the relationship, you'll quickly know what went wrong between them. But, if you're open-minded, willing to have an entertaining time, you're sure to enjoy it objectively, and you'll get a little bit of everything.

Ubicado en la segunda estación de invierno, se muestra un final abierto. Para los que se preguntan "¿Qué hubiera pasado si...?" Bueno, no te dejan nada a la imaginación: te muestran lo que sucedió y lo que quizás quisieras que hubiese pasado; lo real versus lo ideal; lo bueno versus lo mejor... Parecer ser de que te están dando la oportunidad de elegir el final que más te guste.

Por todo, ¿es un musical alegre o triste? Creo que depende de cuál sea tu estado emocional al momento que la veas. Si estás en una buena racha en la vida y todo parece estar saliéndote bien, seguro tu corazón se acelerará con alegría al ver las desbordantes ganas de alcanzar los sueños de las personas que ves en las pantallas, sonreirás al ver lo bueno que les pasa, te convencerán rápido las palabras de ánimo que tienen las amigas de Mia y compartirás el sentimiento de logro cuando van progresando ambos en sus carreras. Pero si crees que no te está yendo tan bien en la vida, serás sensible a lo que les pasa a los protagonistas de forma individual, a los desazones que tienen, sentirás en tu corazón el esfuerzo que hacen para combatir el desánimo y negativismo, y compartirás el enfoque realista que muestran a menudo. Si estás cortejando a otra persona, no será difícil imaginarte sustituyendo sus rostros por el tuyo y el de tu pareja en las escenas más felices y románticas. Pero si no estás en un buen momento de la relación, sabrás rápidamente lo que salió mal entre ellos. Pero, si te sientas con mente abierta, dispuesto a pasar un rato entretenido, seguro que la disfrutarás con objetividad, y tendrás un poco de todo.

As I said in a previous post, in films we hear sentences that are well thought out, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, profound, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the film. So I present again the three sentences that I liked the most of this production.

Como dije en un post anterior, en los films escuchamos oraciones bien pensadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Bright and dark. Joyful and sad. Optimistic and realistic. Romantic and disillusioning. Very well done. Simple, harmonic, clear and aesthetic story. Good music. Simple and interesting lyrics. Artistic details delicately placed in key places. Two hours of good material. I recommend it.
