There are certain things I love about the changing of seasons, most especially when I can predict the next season that is at the corner because it helps me prepare for it adequately. I actually love knowing the seasons that are attached to particular periods of the year. I don’t know if it’s because that’s the way it has been since I was born and have gotten used to it, but I feel it’s best that way and it works perfectly for me. However, talking about the kind of weather that is very unbearable for me to deal with, I think that would be the hot weather.
I’m from the part of the world where the weather can get extremely hot during this period, all you’ll be wishing for at this point is for the temperature to drop, even if it’s only for a few hours. The heat can be so exhausting, especially during the afternoon.
One of the things I hate about this weather is how uncomfortable it makes one even when carrying out your regular daily activities. Imagine doing the dishes, tidying up your room, or even eating and you’re having sweat all over your face. Even down to staying indoors can be a difficult thing especially in the country I am in where power supply can be disappointing. And when you try to sleep it doesn’t happen instantly because the room remains warm due to the effect of the hot sun even long after it has gone down.
The worse thing about this is that you cannot always avoid the heat. Whether you like it or not you still have work to do, places to go, and certain responsibilities to carry out. Even when you just want to stay inside and avoid the hot sun there are still times that one thing or the other would require you to go outside. And by the time you return home, you may feel as though the weather has taken almost all of your energy.
I also find it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities during this period. Things like going out for a walk in the afternoon, in heat seasons I become reluctant to do them.Instead of enjoying the fresh air, you find yourself searching for shade or looking for somewhere to sit down. Activities that would normally help you relax are now what makes you feel uncomfortable.
To make things a little bit bearable, I try to make some adjustments on how I carry out my routine. Instead of going out on afternoons, I push it to the evening. The weather is usually more comfortable at that time, and walking gives me an opportunity to clear my head after a long day. I can think about different things, enjoy the surroundings, and relax without dealing with the intense heat of the afternoon sun.
I also try to drink lots of water, put on light clothes, and avoid spending too much time outside during the hottest hours of the day whenever possible. Small adjustments like these does not mean that the weather would change, but they can go a long way in reducing my body temperature.
To be honest, this is one reason I appreciate the Harmattan season. I enjoy the cooler mornings and evenings, and the weather often makes it easier to go about my daily activities. There is something about waking up to a cool morning instead of immediately feeling the heat.
But then, every season comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Despite the downsides and troubles that come with heat seasons, it still has some aspects of it that are useful to us, so I won’t entirely label it bad, it’s just my own personal preference towards the weather.
