Come Discover Ciutadella: The Spot in Menorca Chosen by Most Tourists
Ciutadella is one of the most visited places in Menorca and is frequently chosen as visitors’ “favorite.” And that’s where a little rivalry arises on this Balearic island, namely
The only two “cities” in Menorca—the rest are all small towns. And when I say “cities,” I hope you’re not picturing anything like Barcelona or Málaga in Spain. Not even Valencia or Palma de Mallorca. They’re two very small cities, but quite charming.

It took me a while to warm up to Ciutadella. I have a certain unconscious rebellious streak when I travel—it seems that if a lot of people like something, I’m bound to dislike it. And that’s very much the case with this little city; it’s the symbol of Menorca.

The first time I went, I felt somewhat obligated by a traveler’s sense of duty—the idea that, since I was in Menorca, how could I not go to Ciutadella? Then I started going out of boredom, because I had nowhere else to go and the bus took me there for free (even though it took two hours to get there).
The first time, grumbling a bit because I was also tired and really hot, I took some photos, which I actually liked quite a bit.
I found those picturesque spots—truly standout and attractive to any visitor.

The thing about Ciutadella is that it seems to transport you to another era in history—probably the Middle Ages—when stone buildings stood out, and where today you can see the stone gleaming from constant use and the flow of people.
Its street markets give me a similar feeling, as I mentioned the other day in the post with pictures of some of them.
This time, I’d like to share a few of these details with you—details that, at times, helped lift that sort of “bad mood” that, for some reason, the whole idea of the famous Ciutadella used to put me in.

In the end, this little town really does have its charm, with a few hidden spots that show traces of modernity in a place that’s still steeped in tradition—both in its appearance and its spirit.

I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you that Ciutadella is extremely “trendy,” since it’s a favorite spot for fairly well-off people to go out for a drink or a meal, especially along the harbor. In fact, people often buy clothes specifically to visit Ciutadella in the afternoon or evening, and since Menorca is a Balearic island, there’s a certain tendency for women to wear skirts or dresses—something traditional in this part of Spain, but which in Menorca is arguably more deeply rooted in the customs of both locals and visitors.
