Seed Ball Party at Ca' Paradiso

🌿☀️🤖

This afternoon at Ca' Paradiso, between making the beds for the guests, checking the room temperature and pulling thorns out of our donkey's muzzle ("Ciao Chokino, are you frozen, my love?"), I had one of those conversations that start with a practical question and end up... at the meaning of life. 😄

My friend I. was helping me get the rooms ready, and I asked her opinion on something I've been thinking about for days. Meanwhile @choko.shock supervised the work from the comfort of his bed. 🐶

☀️ The temptation: an agrivoltaic plant

There's space here, the land slopes all the way down to the river, and someone called me today with an offer. They told me that below 100 kW you don't even need a transformer cabin. The new agrivoltaic systems are vertical, bifacial panels facing east-west: they catch the morning sun on one side and the evening sun on the other, and they take up only about 2 meters of land per row. Underneath and between the rows you can still grow lavender and aromatic herbs. So the land keeps producing food and beauty, not just electricity.

My idea is mainly self-consumption: cutting costs, not becoming an energy producer. And having a plan B: if one day the power goes out, a place that runs on electricity is finished. With a small battery (and a small heat pump) you can stay independent even if the world goes crazy.

I. listened, and then she asked me the question I needed to hear:

"You call this place Paradise. A guest comes here looking for something untouched... and finds a wall of solar panels in front of this view?"

She's right that the old ground-mounted panel fields are ugly: I would never accept one either. But she made me think about a few points that go beyond the numbers:

  • 🌍 The environmental impact, and the maintenance: panels don't pollute, but they wear out, hail damages them, and strong wind is a risk.
  • 🏡 Coherence with the vision of Ca' Paradiso: a natural place can offer Wi-Fi and comfort, but it shouldn't look like a technology park.
  • 🏭 Who is buying the land: today many multinationals send people around (I even saw a job ad for it!) to convince owners to sell their fields for agrivoltaic and wind projects. Fertile land taken away from agriculture.
  • ⛓️ Public funding (PNRR and similar): they give you the money, but then they decide what you must do.

The truth is that at 100,000 euros I had already excluded it. If it cost 25,000 and paid for itself in two years... the question opens up again. 🤔

What would you do? I'd really like to hear from those of you who live in the countryside.

🟤 The Seed Ball Party (and the cracks)

Last Sunday, 1 November, we held our Seed Ball Party, the first phase of the reforestation: on the hills of Cagli, one hectare of land will become a Food Forest. Before planting, the soil must come alive again, so we started with seed balls of clay and seeds, plus green manure, to regenerate it. We kneaded them by hand, as Fukuoka taught, together with Marco Fracasso, who joined us for the day. 🌱

The clay-and-seed mix...and the cracks we found today 😅With Marco Fracasso at the party

Today, in the farmers' chat, someone wrote: "Yesterday I made the seed balls in the cement mixer, but I didn't have time to sow them. Today I found them all cracked. Is that normal?" I went to check ours... same problem! 😅 We probably dried them indoors, where it's too hot and dry. Usually this is a summer job. Any seed-ball experts out there?

🤖 From solar panels to artificial intelligence

From energy, the step to AI was short. I. pointed out something many people forget: AI needs food, and its food is energy. Data centers are hungry and they'll need more and more of it. So either someone protects the land, or it ends up covered with whatever is needed to feed the machines.

She's critical, but she also admits it: "In the end you have to go hand in hand with technology, because we can't stop it or control it anymore. The key is to integrate the two things." And AI, which annoys so many people, is already in our pockets. 📱

📺 Black Mirror, Fahrenheit 451 and Matrix

I. loves science fiction, because for her it isn't fiction: it's an announcement of what will come. She told me about some Black Mirror episodes:

  • ⭐ The one where everyone rates everyone else with a feedback score, and a few bad ratings can stop you from even boarding a plane (Nosedive, and in some places reality is already close).
  • 💾 The one where, at the end of life, you can pay to upload your consciousness to a server and keep living forever, young, as in a dream (San Junipero).
  • 💳 A recent one about subscriptions (Common People, 2025): stop paying and something essential to your life switches off.
  • 🔺 And one with a pyramid-shaped home assistant that tells you how to meditate and live your day: a spiritual guide with a subscription. 😳

Then we talked about Fahrenheit 451: the novel by Ray Bradbury is from 1953, and the film by François Truffaut from 1966. In the firefighter's house there's already a flat TV hanging on the wall like a painting, decades before plasma screens! And the resistance survives by memorizing books, passing them on by voice, like the ancient sutras. We also remembered 1984 by Orwell, with words that change their meaning. And of course the first Matrix: a punch in the stomach. 🥊

Here our visions met. I believe that what we imagine already exists: an idea is already a creation, and the time it takes to build it is only a window. That's why progress can't be stopped: in a way it has already happened. Science fiction gets us used to it, and those who aren't aware just suffer it passively.

💛 What no machine can replace

On one point we completely agreed: our inner life is the only real freedom we have left. AI doesn't create the way we do: it mixes millions of human ideas in a giant centrifuge, and sometimes the result is wonderful precisely because it comes from thousands of people. But intuition, the heart, human unpredictability (that 1% that in every film changes the ending) remain ours. Sometimes it's an error, sometimes it changes the world.

I. also said something that touched me: our generation is a bridge. We started with the Commodore 64 and analog life, we crossed into the digital era, and we know what we've left behind. Our parents stayed with the Nokia. Kids today are born already scrolling, and being a teenager today must be really heavy. 📲

And then food: there's already food of series A, B and C, depending on what you can afford. In a transhumanist world where you only need supplements, who cares about rabbit in porchetta or good coffee... and then who cares if the land is contaminated? 🌾

That's exactly why places like Ca' Paradiso exist: real food, real land, real people. With Wi-Fi and Claude, sure, but used with awareness. 🌿

So: solar panels yes or no? And do you think science fiction predicts the future, or creates it? Let me know in the comments! 👇

Pannelli solari in Paradiso? Agrivoltaico, IA e Black Mirror, mentre facevamo i letti

Festa di RiforestAzione a Ca' Paradiso

🌿☀️🤖

Terra fertile tolta all'agricoltura.

Voi cosa fareste? Mi piacerebbe molto sentire chi vive in campagna.

🤖 Dai pannelli solari all'intelligenza artificiale

📺 Black Mirror, Fahrenheit 451 e Matrix

Allora: pannelli solari sì o no? 👇
