Hello, my dear fellow bloggers! Today, I want to take you along for an event that is very special to us Venezuelan Catholics: the celebration of the feast day of Saint José Gregorio Hernández. As some of you may know, he was officially canonized during a ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy, on October 25th of last year (2025) by Pope Leo XIV. Saint José Gregorio Hernández is a highly significant figure for Venezuelans—not only in religious and cultural terms, but also in the fields of medicine and science. Beyond being a man of faith, he was an accomplished medical professional; in fact, he brought the first microscope to the country from Germany. He also trained his students and colleagues in the use of this instrument and, furthermore, organized and established the first laboratory for Histology, Experimental Physiology, and Bacteriology at the Central University of Venezuela.

Beyond all those scientific contributions, he dedicated his time, his patience, and his life to caring for the most vulnerable. He only charged for consultations those who could afford to pay, and he established a small, makeshift hospital in his sister’s home—where he himself lived—from which he attended to the poor who came to him for help. He cared for them with love and spoke to them about faith; for all these reasons, people hold him in great affection and call him “The Doctor of the Poor.”

In the city of Valencia, Venezuela, there is a church—the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi—which houses one of the relics of this beloved saint, as well as an image of him. The day before yesterday, a religious event was held to mark the saint’s birthday, featuring cultural and religious observances, including a procession with the image. Following the Mass and the cultural activities, the image was removed from its niche and placed atop a vehicle, while the parishioners followed the procession on foot.

This procession extended along several streets, and many people joined in.

One of the things I liked most was this new mural they created in the city’s historic district, right near the temple. That area has many beautiful murals, but this one really struck me—not just because it’s new, but because of its level of realism and depth; it’s very colorful and full of detail.

And, of course, I can’t overlook something else I really like: this interactive statue of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández. It’s considered interactive because you can take photos with him—as if he were examining your heart—and it’s located right in front of the Church of San Francisco de Asís.
