One thing that I have been finding very difficult is I don't know people who genuinely care about me or value what I do for them. I have gotten to observe one thing about humans: the moment you are successful, you help people to solve problems, or you are always available, you will see a lot of people around you. Have you ever asked yourself what will happen if you have nothing to offer to these friends that have always been around you?

This week's prompt has really put me into thinking. I have myself this question: do people really love and appreciate me, or are they with me because of what benefit they get from me? It's time we have to take some time and reflect on our lives, asking ourselves some important questions, such as "If I am to be down today, who will really check up on me?" Do you have that person that will listen to you when you need someone to talk to? Who stays with you if you can’t help them financially? Believe me or not, these little questions will reveal the nature of your relationship.
I have got to discover that not everyone who smiles with you genuinely cares about you. Most of the time, what you can offer keeps attracting people, and what they get to benefit from you. The surprising thing is when those things are no longer available, you see that their attitude will change towards you. It is always painful when people who should care for you start giving you attitude; it is always painful because we believe that people around us love and appreciate us for who we are. We always believe that friendship and relationships are built on genuine care, but there will come a time in life when you will question people’s intentions, and that is normal.
I had some people who suddenly became my friends because of what they were benefiting from me back then; the set of friends will also call to check up on me, and at the end of the call, they will state the reason why they called, but the moment I started facing some financial problems, none of them were there for me. Which has become unavailable.

There are still people who genuinely care and appreciate us. There is nothing bad in helping someone, but it can only be wrong if you are using the person. Healthy relationships involve giving and receiving. When the problem comes in is when it’s one-sided; a friend only remembers you when they need money, connections, and so on.
It is very difficult to see people who genuinely care for you, but it can also be seen in little things. It is that person who checks up on you without needing anything. A friend who genuinely celebrates your success without feeling threatened. Someone who stays by and supports you even in difficult moments. As a human, your value shouldn’t depend on what you can do for other people.
Of late I have been telling myself I am more than money, positions, and connections. If people only value me because of what they gain from me, that doesn't determine my worth. In as much as we don’t know if people genuinely care for us, we should also direct that question to ourselves if we are guilty of the same thing. Do we reach out to people only when we need them? Do you care about and appreciate people in our lives? For a relationship to be meaningful, we need to appreciate people in our lives and not use them for our own selfish interests.
