One of my friends called me this morning asking me some question. According to her, she is really depressed and needs someone to talk to. Wow, at this point I know we will be so curious to know what the question is. Here comes the question: If I had to choose between staying in a toxic workplace that pays well and becoming unemployed with no immediate source of income, which would I pick? To be honest, if there is something I love so much, it is peace of mind. In as much as I can't work in a toxic workplace, I still have to stay temporarily there while looking for another job. I am not staying there with the ideology that I should tolerate a toxic workplace. But I will still be there looking out for another place because there are a lot of responsibilities on my shoulders. There are a lot of bills to pay, and these bills can't pause because a workplace has become toxic, but leaving without a backup plan will be the worst mistake I will make.

You see, my job is just more than a workplace for me. That is why I cherish my work so much because from the money I earn I pay for my accommodation and support my family and also do other necessary things for myself. Losing that source of income can be frustrating, more especially when there is no other work or savings. In situations like this, I have to think before taking any decisions. If I should pick the short-term decision, it will be to remain employed, and if I am to go with the long-term decision, it will be to search for a healthier workplace.

For the fact that I want to remain there temporarily, that doesn't mean I will accept everything from them; there should be boundaries. I will focus more on doing my work professionally and try my best to avoid any form of drama. While still there, I will be searching for opportunities elsewhere and acquire as many skills as possible and also try my best to connect with people.

One thing is sure: every human has their right; for someone like me, there is a limit to what I can sacrifice at my workplace. Working in a toxic environment can put me into a state of depression; it will affect my relationships and my happiness the moment I am being humiliated and bullied at the workplace. At this point the workplace is seriously affecting my well-being; I will have to make a move. If there is one thing I always protect, it is my mental health and emotions. At this point, these two are more important to me than job security when working in an environment that causes harm. Of course money is important, but there are things money can't replace; at the same time, there should be a plan B.

I believe that there is a difference between a stressful job and working in an environment that constantly damages your self-esteem and self-worth. There is no workplace without a difficult moment; there must be challenges and deadlines. These don’t make a workplace toxic.

I will not advise anyone to quit without finding another job. To be honest, unemployment can affect emotional and mental wellbeing. I swear, searching for work, dealing with rejection, and so on. That is why before I resign there must be a plan B, but if there is no plan yet, I will temporarily remain there while looking for work.
