"Ifunanya, you better pass your waec and jamb this time around; if not, I will not pay for your exams again, Mr. Okoro said.
"But Dad I have told you that I do not want to stay here and study for my exams", but you refused ifunanya replied
"What is wrong with this house that you always want to run away", Mr. Okoro asked
"I told you that I don't have time to always study here; the workload in this house is always weighing me down, ifunanya replied again.
"So ordinary small chores you do in the house is what is weighing you down, you are just looking for an excuse to go to your mother's sister's house," Mr. Okoro said frowning
"Dad, is not just the house chores alone, Aunty ulunma doesn't allow me to study, at all times she has something that she wants me to do especially whenever she sees me raise my book to study" " Ifunanya said raising her voice
"Are you in a way yelling at me, ifunanya, Mr. Okoro asked his frown deepen
With a low tone and a calm mind, ifunanya replied to his father, "No, dad am sorry if I raised my voice; all I'm saying is that since this is the last time you will be paying for me to sit for waec and jamb again. Why don't you just grant me this one little wish of mine? Let me go and stay at Aunty Ebubu's house, after my exams I will return back.
Mr Okoro sighed; he was in deep thought; he didn't know how to convince his wife to allow Ifunanya to leave the house and stay in another place for the period of her exams because he knew that his wife was a very stubborn woman.
"Alright, I have heard; I will have a discussion with your stepmother and see what she thinks about it. Mr Okoro finally said after thinking for a while.
"Oh No, Dad, if you can't make the decision on your own, don't bother ifunanya said with an angry tone.
"What's that supposed to mean, young woman? Watch your tone with me. I am still your father, if you have forgotten, Mr. Okoro said, slamming the table.
"Sorry, but all I am saying is that your wife will never agree, and she is the main reason why I want to leave the house; the first and second exams, she made me miss three important papers, and that is how I managed to fail them back to back". Ifunanya was obviously very pissed and determined to get what she wants
"What are you talking about? Explain it to me; what do you mean she made you miss three important papers? Mr Okoro's face was plastered with shock on hearing the revelation.
"On the days that I have biology, chemistry, and physics, she will always have an emergency delivery or urgent work she wants me to finish, even if I remind her that I have exams on those days, she will insist that I finish what she send me before leaving and if I try to sneak out, she had locked the gate, so I will have no choice but to finish what she send me to do, that way I end up missing each paper", ifunanya explained Everything to her father.
"You mean that's what she has been doing to you and why didn't you tell me all this while," Mr. Okoro asked
"She always threatens to starve me if I ever speak to you about it. I have to finally gather my courage as she is not around to tell you my pain; I don't want to rewrite my exams again; she knelt down and pleaded with her father.
Please, Dad, if you have any little love left in your heart for me, allow me to go to my mother's sister's house to stay and write this exam; I want to enter the high institution like others. She pleaded.
Finally, Mr. Okoro gives in and allows Ifunanya to go to her mother's sister's house for her exams. When her stepmother came back, she was very angry and asked her husband if he believed the rubbish the daughter said to him more than what she told him.
Ifunanya wrote her exams and came back home. When the results came out, ifunanya clean sweep both her waec, jamb, and even the scholarship, and she came out victorious. Her father was overjoyed, as for her stepmother, she didn't even pretend to be happy.
I was equally happy for her cause she had suffered at the hands of that woman; Ifunanya was my neighbor's child.
