In 1994 British comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral Hugh Grant stars as Charlie, member of small group of dedicated bachelors who gather at the weddings to mock "traitors" from their ranks. At one of such occasions Charlie meets Carrie (played by Andie MacDowall), charming American woman who would ultimately lead him to make radical change in his lifestyle. Directed by Mike Newell and produced with relatively low budget, Four Weddings and a Funeral is nowadays known as an immensely popular film that established its screenwriter Richard Curtis as the king of contemporary romantic comedies. The film also established Curtis’ formula based around relatively uneventful plots, middle class characters and mild comedy spiced with some darker dramatic overtones. Despite Hugh Grant becoming major international star because of this film, it is nothing more solid, well-acted and well-produced, but mostly forgettable genre piece.
