Netflix has cultivated much of its contemporary reputation upon true crime documentaries, and Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel represents one of the more recent additions to this burgeoning genre. What ostensibly distinguishes this four-part series is its gothic atmosphere, derived from one of Los Angeles's most notorious locations. The Cecil Hotel—that melancholy Art Deco edifice in the city centre—served for much of the twentieth century as the backdrop for serial murders, suicides, and sundry tragic occurrences. Yet despite this undeniably fascinating setting, director Joe Berlinger's exploration of the 2013 disappearance of Canadian tourist Elisa Lam ultimately proves a frustrating exercise in narrative bloat and exploitative storytelling.
The series leans heavily upon the hotel's sinister reputation, transforming the building's unhappy history into mere scenery for what is, in essence, a deeply sad yet rather banal case of a young woman afflicted by a psychotic episode. When the penultimate episode finally reveals the brutal truth—that Lam, who suffered from bipolar disorder, accidentally drowned in the hotel's water tank following a manic episode—the viewer has already endured nearly three hours of meaningless conspiracy theories, amateur internet sleuthing, and speculation regarding supernatural phenomena.
Berlinger, whose previous true crime documentaries demonstrate considerably greater merit, has here opted for quantity at the expense of quality. The series is unquestionably overlong; material that might have sustained a taut feature-length documentary has been stretched across four episodes replete with repetitive establishing shots of the hotel exterior and tedious dramatisations that contribute nothing of substance. One suspects this bloated runtime owes less to creative necessity than to streaming platform pressures demanding maximum minutes to bolster engagement metrics.
Particularly objectionable is the treatment afforded to the "internet detectives" who were—and in some cases remain—obsessed with Lam's case. The series initially portrays these figures as earnest digital investigators uncovering hidden truths, only gradually revealing how their obsessive fixation spiralled into the harassment of innocent witnesses and the levelling of unfounded accusations. Rather than offering a meaningful meditation upon the toxicity of true crime as entertainment, however, the documentary employs precisely the same sensationalist methodology it purports to condemn.
The production is salvaged to some extent by its technical accomplishments. The cinematography makes judicious use of the Cecil Hotel's decaying yet visually striking interiors, whilst interviews with former staff and residents provide an authentic glimpse into the establishment's peculiar ecosystem. It is genuinely regrettable that Berlinger did not place greater reliance upon this substantive material, instead resorting to tabloid exploitation.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel ultimately illustrates several of the most troubling aspects of the contemporary true crime boom: an authentic, intimate tragedy has been stretched beyond all proportion, packaged as a commemoration befitting a public catastrophe, and presented as a circus attraction. Despite pretensions to seriousness, one cannot escape the uncomfortable impression that the filmmakers have profited from the very morbid curiosity that drove amateur detectives to dissect a stranger's private psychiatric crisis. Like many similar series, the entire affair might easily have occupied half the duration. As it stands, this represents a missed opportunity—and at four hours, a rather lengthy one at that.
