A couple of us who are financially successful (I don't yet consider myself in that list) may be able to relate to having worked their tails off to build whatever life they currently have. They also live in constant paranoia of their succes being compromised at any minute. For many of us, it is this paranoia that propels to to keep striving. While the fear may be about loss, what happens is that actions actually builds more wealth over time.
But consider another scenario where we've simply been handed our wealth, like an inheritance or security that didn't come from the effort, striving and paranoia of the originator. Suddenly striving becomes optional and the motivation to further take action isn't as strong. Yes, a few might take actions towards improvement or at least maintenance, but I don't think the overwhelming majority will be similarly inclined.
Maybe it's the case that something given without earning simply doesn't hold as much value to the holder. Some even go as far as resenting the fortunes and opportunities bestowed on them, like it is some form of burden. They deride their good fortune, showing no appreciation and open demonization, yet have no intention of giving it up.
A lack of appreciation to our good fortune and circumstances is one very certain way of losing those privileges. Once it is gone, be rest assured that recovering every drop of what once was will need to be earned back.
