Music as believed is the combination of sounds pleasant to the hearing. Music has been even since the inception of humans because of the ability to produce and recognize sounds especially the sweet ones was part of human make up. Music as know has different elements such as harmony, melody, rhythm and many others. Also, music has different genres such as the rock, pop, jazz, hip hop, blues, Christian music, funk, reggae music and others. However, my favourite is still the gospel music which to some is the same as christian music or to some a part of christian music.
The gospel music is one of the oldest form of music in Nigeria my dear country in Africa as introduced by the colonial masters who brought the gospel to Africa with other packages such as education, healthcare etc. The gospel music is related to the Christian faith and as I am of the Christian faith, right as a young boy in the Church Choir, this is the foremost type of music i was introduced too and which kick started my music career/journey up until now. This is the more reason why gospel (Christian) music serves as a foundation or base that produced many artistes even in other genres round the world based on the fact that it was the first genre of music they were introduced to as a result of their Christian faith background.
Gospel (Christian) music is timeless as it found relevance right from the onset up until now though has experienced many transformations and upgrades in light of modern sophisticated technologies. For example, it started with the use of traditional musical instruments based on different cultures and tribes such as local drums, gongs as available then but now, the use of piano, guitar, sound equipments is the order of the day. Its timeless ability and relevance makes it to be my choice and favourite anyday anytime.
Gospel music has many shades of expressions over time such as traditional gospel music as the foremost expression of it based on songs in dialects and local languages. Also, there is contemporal gospel music as seen in present times especially from the "whites" which now found expression in Africa with awesome artistes such as Kirk franklin, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Marvin Sapp, Donnie McClurkin and others. Gospel music also found expressions with various gospel music artistes rising in and on the shores of Nigeria and Africa such as Sonnie Badu (Ghana), Nathaniel Bassey (Nigeria), Sinach (Nigeria), Benjamin Dube (South Africa), Joe Mettle (Ghana), Ntokozo Mbambo (South Africa), Tim Godfrey (Nigeria) etc.
One of the greatest impact of gospel music is how inspirational and soul lifting it is. For example, here in the southwest Nigeria, one of the brightest gospel artiste is Evangelist Tope Alabi whose music is inspirational and sought after even from people of other religions. Another impact of gospel music is its foundational and breeding nature where artiste are raised even with expressions in other genres. Gospel music are original, can be spontaneous and have good/quality lyrical content which can be words of prayer, counsel, encouragement and others.
In Nigeria, the impact of the gospel music genre in the music industry and the overall image projection of the country cannot be overemphasized. Many gospel artistes has hold music festivals, crusades, outreaches even as some are organised by Churches. Notable among this includes; THE EXPERIENCE by House on the Rock Church, MASS by Tolucci, HALLELUYAH CHALLENGE by Nathaniel Bassey, UPPER ROOM by Dunsin Oyekan, THE AFRICAN PRAISE EXPERIENCE by House on the Rock and many others. Nigeria been tagged as a "religious" country also has the influence of gospel music in it as many Nigeria gospel artistes are known beyond the shores of Nigeria and Africa.

The great antecedents laid by notable Nigeria gospel artistes such as Panam percy Paul, Evangelist Bola Are and others cannot be overemphasized. It's amazing that gospel music in Nigeria cut across all the nooks and crannies of the country with each tribe well represented. For example, Chioma Jesus is notable among the Igbos, Tope Alabi among the Yorubas and Solomon Lange among the Hausa. Therefore, gospel music has helped to promote peace and unity in Nigeria through various music collaborations among the gospel artistes. Gospel music is my favorite because of its timeless nature, multiple expressions and great undeniable impacts. Thank you for reading as comments and contributions are welcomed.
