Introduction…

**To you who have chosen of your own free will to read my testimony, I thank you infinitely, for it is my heart speaking amidst my weariness, amidst a part of this phase that has a name and a surname.**

Thank you once again for taking time out of your rest to read the words of this carer who, without formal education or training, learnt to care out of pure love; these metaphorical words are my own voice.

This is me: metaphors with a touch of irony from an ordinary woman

This is me, with a mixed expression, sometimes with a smile that I no longer know whether it’s genuine or fake, but there it is, deceiving the outsider and, these days, even the woman herself.

This is me, the one who is tired, not of life, but rather of circumstances—those that seem to have taken a particular dislike to me or have grown fond of me, because every now and then one latches onto me just as a tick latches onto a dog or a flea onto a cat, and in both cases we know they are merely parasites.

This is me, hunching over of my own free will, wanting to be a hunchback in a city that isn’t Notre Dame, in a situation that isn’t a musical, with no bells to swing from—just a forty-four-year-old woman with a battered back, tense shoulders, more tense than the chains that ships cast into the sea with a firm anchor at the end.

This is me, with my strange legs—sometimes as firm as iron bars, at other times as weak as wool, and just as often clumsy, bumping into different objects every second, as if they were magnets seeking affection from inert objects.

This is me, with a wandering mind, a broken compass, the one who cannot tell north from south and walks purely on intuition, without knowing what tomorrow will bring, let alone what today will bring.

This is me, the one with cold hands that have now, through adaptation, grown warm, showing myself that the duality within me shifts at will, out of necessity and love. Hands that feel like stoves and warm my head, through which ideas enter—those troubled thoughts, the ones that only he and I know.

This is me, the one with dull eyes, who looks like a raccoon because of insomnia—and that insomnia, too, was self-imposed, because I must look after things by day, in the evening and also at night; it is a commitment, not to one, not to two, but to someone who watches from the vast sky.

And at the end of the day, when the day sleeps, the night keeps watch, and the world finally falls silent, I am left alone, in the midst of darkness that does not frighten me, listening to sounds I have learnt to recognise, to know which are good and which are bad, where an hour spent awake means a pleasant night’s sleep for my beloved.
