Greetings!
Whenever I come across the prompt of writing about one’s favourite sports, I can’t help but laugh out loud first. Why? Because I always take a moment to glance through all of them, wondering if I actually know how to participate practically. But no—I’m just here for the fun and the likeness, not for actual playing or participation.
Funny enough, I know how to play them so well in my head, but when it comes to physically engaging, that’s where the line is drawn.
Without further ado, here’s a list of my favourite sports, ranked in order.
- Football/Soccer
I am a die-hard lover of football matches, but not all of them. What do I mean? Read on.

I was born into a home where my dad was deeply passionate about football matches. His love for the game was so intense that we frowned countless times at how he deprived us of watching our favourite TV shows whenever Nigeria had a match. Yes, his interest in Nigeria’s matches was so great that, whenever they played, our house transformed into a football arena, with everyone assembling to watch.
Interestingly, I didn’t really like football as a child. However, as I grew older, I automatically found myself loving national football matches, especially during tournaments like the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). So, my love for football is mostly ignited during these tournaments, rather than during league matches. I do watch league matches, but they don’t move me the way my adrenaline spikes whenever Nigeria is playing.
This is why I choose to support a very low-class league team. You know why? I don’t want to be bantered or feel any emotional attachment when they lose or win. Lol.
My love for football doesn’t stop there—it extends to women’s football. OMG! This part freaks me out a lot. My friends in this blockchain space who also know me on WhatsApp can testify to how loud I become whenever it’s a women’s football tournament, such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
- Swimming
During the Olympic Games, one of the sports I always look out for after football is swimming. I love this sport so much because of how it is done. It appears easy, but it’s very difficult as well.

This is one sport I should be able to engage in to a good extent because I grew up in a riverine area where swimming was part of our childhood fun. However, we were greatly restricted because the river was considered dangerous and surrounded by a lot of superstitions. Oh! Africans will definitely relate to the superstitions attached to rivers.
While in secondary school, we learned various swimming styles, which I mastered very well because I took them seriously and practiced in the river. So, watching this swimming sport and seeing all those different styles being displayed gives me a whole lot of vibes.
Before I drop my keyboard, should I mention the sport I frown at so much? It’s boxing!
Why?
I hate the fact that it’s a fighting sport, and yet it has a referee to separate the fight.
Thanks for reading!
