Material World: How Can We Take Care of the Things Around Us?
My vacuum cleaner is finally broken. I mean, it's not totally broken. If I could find the parts, I might be able to fix it. However, it's almost impossible to find the parts easily, so in the end, I decided to get a new one after temporarily fixing it with duct tape. Honestly, I don't want to use duck tape, but sometimes you can't help it. I wrote about the duck tape emergency culture in North America before.
Duck tape (or some people call it duct tape) shares a common North American history rooted in World War II military innovations that quickly expanded into Canadian households and industries.
Hmm... if the military uses it, of course it's tough and useful! My vacuum cleaner was very powerful, and it was great at picking up my dog's hair, but it was also pretty heavy. Finally, I bought a new one from the hardware store. Expensive! Everything has become so expensive, including vacuum cleaners. The previous brand was too expensive, and I couldn't afford it. Instead, I bought a Canadian brand that was more reasonably priced. The new one is so light and plasticky. I hope it will last for a long time, but I'm not sure.
I've had to fix or replace several electrical products over the past few years. I want to fix things as much as I can. However, sometimes trying to fix something can actually end up costing more than buying a new one.

Well, this is my new favourite mug, which has a pretty illustration. The dog looks very similar to my dog. When my dog runs around the yard, he runs just like this, between the flowers.
That's because I bought this new mug. I hadn't had a favourite mug for many years. First, I bought a bigger one, which also has a pretty mushroom illustration.

This one almost became my new favourite. However, the mug started leaking after a few weeks. It was shocking. The surface looked completely fine. I guessed that there was a crack inside the clay at the base.
Sadly, I had to take it back to the store. Luckily, the nice staff gave me the choice of a refund or an exchange, although there was no guarantee that the same thing wouldn't happen again. I thought I could exchange it because there were a few others on the shelf. Then, another black mug with a dog illustration caught my eye.
That made me start rethinking the material world.
I used to have many clothes, shoes, books, and other things. However, I stopped keeping so many things because I have moved many times in my life. I also needed to be thrifty because of depression and other reasons.
After the war, our ancestors started collecting things in large quantities. Having lots of things and being surrounded by them became, I guess, a symbol of a good quality of life. Now, about 81 years after the war, our world has changed so much. The environment has also changed dramatically.
Almost everything has become easy to get, and we can buy things whenever we want. Things are no longer necessarily irreplaceable. We are encouraged to buy new products constantly, but that's not always good for us or for the environment.
I remember that my grandparents could fix or make almost everything. I don't have those skills like they did.
Nowadays, everything has become so expensive, even though our income and economic situation don't seem to be getting any better. I recently read an article titled "Minimum Wage Hikes Set to Begin Across Five Provinces."
Five Canadian provinces increased their minimum wages on October 1, 2026. The increases range from 25 to 40 cents per hour, with new minimum wages ranging from $15.70 in Saskatchewan to $17.95 in Ontario.
Life is still tough, though. One of my students told me that he had to pay over $100 to fill half of his diesel tank the other day. It's tough for everyone to afford everyday living expenses.

Wood has also become very expensive. We try to use as much waste wood as possible as kindling, but we can't use everything. We tried to recycle as much as we could when we renovated our yard.
When the previous owners built a wooden deck and other things in the yard, wood was probably much more affordable. They didn't use treated wood, so everything eventually rotted, and it was time to renovate the yard.
We had to change our yard style and decided not to use wood anymore. Instead, we installed some stones. We also have a lot of rocks and stones on our property, so we decided to use those instead. We are arranging for the person who delivers our firewood to collect them and take them away for us soon.

These are typical green compost bins in my area. I use the green one, and my bin is also getting old. The garbage truck sometimes accidentally damages the bins, so I looked into getting a new one. The new ones aren't cheap, though, so I'm still thinking about it.
Some people customize their bins and reinforce the bottom with metal so that they won't be damaged as easily by the garbage truck.
I was wondering how I could recycle my old bin. I have to take it to the local recycling centre. Every time I visit the local recycling centre, it makes me think about the garbage system in our society.

We are all going back to the sky someday. How much of the material world around us can we really take with us in the end?
I know there are a lot of issues with akiya in Japan. An akiya (空き家) is a vacant or abandoned house in Japan, typically found in rural areas, suburbs, and increasingly in urban neighbourhoods.
An acquaintance of mine bought an akiya house and its property in Japan. He told me that he is keeping the property for future possibilities. There are many interesting akiya properties for sale in Japan.
Anyway, our renovation project will never end, even though we've done so much this year. I'll write about our renovation project again someday soon.
