A type of database partitioning that separates large databases into smaller, faster and easier to manage parts. It can be thought of as taking a large dataset and breaking it into different databases.
It is also called horizontal positioning. Here each shard is processed in parallel.
Ethereum is looking to implement sharding as the solution to scalability. Basically it will break the blockchain states into partitions containing states and transactions.
