The Western genre is a film genre defined by the American Film Institute as films which are "set in the American West that [embody] the spirit, the struggle, and the demise of the new frontier". Generally set in the American frontier between the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the closing of the frontier in 1890, the genre also includes many examples of stories set in locations outside the frontier – including Northern Mexico, the Northwestern United States, Alaska, and Western Canada – as well as stories that take place before and after those dates.

Westerns typically feature stock characters such as cowboys, Native Americans, outlaws, sheriffs, and gunslingers. Common themes include conflict between good and evil, the struggle to survive in a harsh and unforgiving environment, and the search for individual identity and meaning.

The Western genre has been a popular staple of the film industry since the early days of cinema. Some of the most iconic films in the genre include:

  • Stagecoach (1939)
  • The Ox-Bow Incident (1943)
  • My Darling Clementine (1946)
  • Red River (1948)
  • High Noon (1952)
  • Shane (1953)
  • The Searchers (1956)
  • Rio Bravo (1959)
  • The Wild Bunch (1969)
  • Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
  • Unforgiven (1992)

The Western genre experienced a decline in popularity in the 1970s, but it has since had a modest revival. In recent years, there have been a number of critically acclaimed Western films released, such as True Grit (2010), Django Unchained (2012), and The Power of the Dog (2021).

The Western genre continues to resonate with audiences today because it deals with universal themes such as good versus evil, the search for identity, and the struggle to survive in a harsh world. Western films also often explore the complex history of the American West, including the relationship between Native Americans and white settlers.
