Not every day do you get the chance to disconnect from the beautiful chaos of the city, although Medellín, being a valley, is the perfect place to escape to the mountains when your body asks for it. My most recent getaway was to Arví Park, located high above Medellín. This green paradise is one of those places that, from the very first moment, wraps you in an unforgettable experience.
The adventure started with the cable car ride up from Santo Domingo, which costs about $5 USD for tourists. This transportation system not only takes you practically to the top of the mountain, but it also offers a visual spectacle along the way. As we climbed higher, the buildings faded behind us and gave way to a new color palette of greens and browns, dominated by mountains covered in lush trees and a soft mist, thanks to the ever-present rain in this city. It was impossible not to fall silent for a few moments, simply taking in the gift of Mother Nature.
At the top, we were greeted by a cool but bearable climate, with a few surprise sun rays whenever the clouds allowed it. We walked along the trails, breathing in the fresh air that nourished our lungs. The landscape is incredibly diverse—spring flowers everywhere, ferns, trees of all shapes and colors, and even small streams that provided a soothing soundtrack for our journey.
At one point, we got lost—literally. With so many routes, we ended up walking aimlessly through the forest until a guide appeared, as if sent by the mountain itself. He offered to walk with us and along the way, shared stories about the park’s origin and how Medellín evolved from a city closed in by mountains to one that opened up to the world. We learned about the ancestral communities that once lived in the area, the park’s ecological importance, and how it protects one of the richest ecosystems in the region. The history of this place is fascinating, confirmed by some colonial ruins you can find along the path that left me with many questions and few answers.
What I loved the most were the little details that usually go unnoticed. Moss covering trees and rocks with a velvety green texture, tiny plants growing in impossible places, and trees so tall they made you feel like an ant. In several areas of the park, there are open spaces perfect for barbecuing or cooking a good sancocho with family. We saw groups of people cooking, sharing, and laughing in the middle of the forest. It’s usually not that crowded, but it was a holiday in Colombia, so the park was full of tourists. That contrast between nature and humanity gives Arví Park a very special energy.
At one point, I sat down among the moss and closed my eyes in silence, surrounded by trees guarding my thoughts. It was a moment of pure connection with my surroundings and with myself, feeling grateful for all the beautiful moments life gives me. Those quiet minutes reminded me how important it is to slow life down. Arví Park is more than just a place for hiking, exercising, or breathing fresh air—it's a complete experience that invites you to reconnect with yourself and your environment. The biodiversity is also impressive: butterflies, hummingbirds, colorful mushrooms, and plants I had never seen before—or perhaps never took the time to notice in such detail.
This adventure was even more special to me because I was accompanied by Esther, Edward, and José, some of the most incredible friends I’ve made in Medellín. Sharing this kind of moment with people who value the same things—who stop to look at a flower with you or to listen to the sound of running water—takes the experience to another level. At the end of the day, it was hard to say goodbye to the park. We walked slowly on the way back, a little lost as we couldn’t find the return route, but thankfully a man offered us a ride down in his car through one of the roads that surround the park.
I have two recommendations: first, come to Medellín at least once in your life for an extended stay, and second, when you do, organize several outings to the countless natural trails that surround the city. Every day I fall more in love with the energy of this place—new friendships, new spaces, new adventures and emotions. Thank you, Arví Park. You are pure magic ❤️

No todos los días se tiene la suerte de poder desconectarse del hermoso caos de la ciudad, aunque Medellín, al ser un Valle, es el lugar perfecto para escaparse a las montañas cuando el cuerpo lo pida. La escapada más reciente fue en el parque Arví, ubicado en lo alto de Medellín, este paraíso verde es uno de esos lugares que, desde es primer momento del recorrido empieza a envolverte en una experiencia inolvidable.
La aventura arrancó con la subida en metrocable desde Santo Domingo, por un costo aproximado de 5 USD para los turistas. Este sistema de transporte no solo te lleva de manera práctica a la cima de la montaña, sino que te ofrece un espectáculo visual durante el trayecto. A medida que subíamos, los edificios iban quedando atrás y se abría paso una nueva paleta de colores que incluía tonos verdes y marrones, dominados por montañas cubiertas de árboles frondosos y una niebla suave producto de la lluvia que nunca se va por completo en esta ciudad. Imposible no quedarse en silencio por unos segundos, simplemente contemplando el regalo de la madre naturaleza.
Ya arriba, nos recibió un clima templado pero tolerable, con algunos rayos de sol repentinos cuando las nubes lo decidían. Caminamos por los senderos, sintiendo ese aire puro que nutre los pulmones. El paisaje es muy diverso, hay flores primaverales por todos lados, helechos, árboles de todos los tamaños y colores, e incluso pequeños riachuelos que suenan como música de fondo para la aventura.
En un momento nos perdimos, literal. Entre tantas rutas, terminamos caminando entre la montaña sin rumbo, pero fue justo ahí cuando apareció un guía, como si nos lo hubiera mandado la misma montaña. Nos ofreció acompañarnos y durante el trayecto nos regaló historias sobre el origen del parque, sobre cómo Medellín pasó de ser una ciudad cerrada entre montañas a abrirse al mundo. Aprendimos sobre las comunidades ancestrales que habitaron la zona, la importancia ecológica del parque y la forma en que protege uno de los ecosistemas más ricos de la región. La historia de este lugar es fascinante, lo confirman algunas ruinas de casas coloniales que puedes encontrar en el camino las cuales me dejan con muchísimas preguntas y pocas respuestas.
Lo que más amé fueron los detalles que suelen pasar desapercibidos. Musgo cubriendo árboles y piedras con una textura de terciopelo verde, diminutas plantas creciendo en lugares imposibles, y árboles tan altos que te hacían sentir una hormiga. En varias zonas del parque hay espacios abiertos ideales para hacer barbacoa o preparar un buen sancocho en familia. Nos encontramos con grupos de personas cocinando, compartiendo y riendo en medio del bosque, generalmente no hay tantas personas pero ese día era feriado acá en Colombia así que era un día turístico. Ese contraste entre lo natural y lo humano, le da al Parque Arví una energía muy especial.
En cierto punto me senté entre el musgo y cerré los ojos en silencio, rodeada de árboles que custodiaban mis pensamiento, fue un momento de conexión pura con el entorno y conmigo misma, agradeciendo todos los hermosos momentos que la vida me regala. Esos minutos de quietud me recordaron lo importante que es bajarle el ritmo a la vida. El Parque Arví además de ser un espacio para hacer hiking, ejercitarte o respirar aire limpio, es una experiencia completa que te invita a reconectar contigo mismo y con tu entorno. La biodiversidad también es impresionante, mariposas, colibríes, hongos de colores, y plantas que nunca en mi vida había observado, o quizás nunca me había tomado el tiempo de observar con tanta atención a sus detalles.
La aventura fue aún más especial para mí porque estuve acompañada por Esther, Edward y José, de los amigos más increíbles que he hecho en Medellín. Compartir este tipo de momentos con personas que valoran lo mismo, que se detienen contigo a mirar una flor o a escuchar el agua correr, eleva aún más la experiencia. Al final del día, nos costó un poco decirle adiós al parque. Caminamos con calma de regreso, un poco perdidos pues no encontrábamos la ruta de retorno, pero afortunadamente un señor nos ofreció llevarnos hasta abajo en su carro por una de las carreteras que rodean el parque.
Recomiendo dos cosas, que al menos una vez en la vida se vengan una temporada larga a Medellín y que cuando hagan eso, organicen varios paseos por las miles de rutas naturales que rodean la ciudad. Cada día me enamoro más de la energía de este lugar, nuevas amistades, nuevos espacios, nuevas aventuras y emociones. Gracias parque Arví, eres magia ❤️
