Hello everyone in the Hive Blog community!

The layout of the architecture in downtown Barcelona has evolved in its form, materials, and distribution since its founding, yet there is still a spirit of preserving colonial structures in some sectors, as they stand as testaments to the past.

Walking down the street where we find the Eulalia Buroz school behind Maturín Street and crossing a small stream, we can take in this view where we come across the bell tower of the city’s Cathedral, located just two blocks away. This view is always curious to me, because sometimes, as we walk through the streets, we feel as though we are being watched, and this composition imposes the bell tower like a tower keeping guard over us—even its shape makes me think of that.

I also took these photographs thinking about the contrast between a structure that is apparently stable and modern structures whose appearance seems to show more wear and deterioration. This always leads me to reflect on how the constant construction of things without being able to maintain them is a behavior that has manifested across several generations, leaving the impression that what is most recent appears the oldest and least fresh.

In my view, this suggests a pattern in the character of this culture, where—as families, population, religiosity, traditions, fraternity, and rituals of communion expand—they have become dispersed to the point of forgetting the original identities and the founding of the city, and even losing a solid purpose of coexistence among people who differ in thought. But I won't dive into drawing conclusions regarding these ideas, which are merely thoughts. I would also like to highlight that when viewing real wear on a young structure, it is also expressed in people's faces—and I am not talking about phenotype, but about wear.

This composition of the tower watching over us has also inspired me to create this watercolor as an artistic chronicle.
