Hello, and welcome to my blog; I hope you are all doing well. Lately, with the major power crisis my country, Venezuela, is going through, I’ve found myself caught in a loop of anxiety. While I haven't reached a state of extreme crisis, the situation has certainly disrupted my routine, my thoughts, and that sense of tranquility we often take for granted. However—and precisely because of this—I want to share the hobby that has helped me keep my sanity and find peace amidst the chaos.

A few years ago, during therapy, my doctor suggested I find activities that would help me focus on something specific. I remembered that, as a child, I loved making jewelry; it was such a fun hobby. My mom would buy the materials, and I would make bracelets, earrings, and necklaces for my aunts. To this day, one of my aunts still has pieces I made back then.

I hold a very proud place in my heart for that little girl who used her creativity to figure out which colors went well together and went to the craft store to buy supplies—all without the help of social media to learn braiding techniques or distinguish quality findings. I was entirely self-taught, guided solely by my own instincts. The process is a bit different now; I often look up current trends and tutorials on how to create different types of braids. Although it started as just a hobby, it has now become part of a small business that helps cover my expenses—something I am deeply grateful for—while also providing a space of calm, which remains my top priority.

Finding a hobby amidst the chaos has helped me immensely; it serves as a reminder that sometimes external circumstances are beyond our control. That is certainly the case with the electricity situation; we are now without service for six or even seven hours a day. Consequently, finding this time—which also helps the hours pass more quickly—is essential for me.

Although I am a perfectionist—often knitting and unravelling my work until it is just right—the knowledge that someone will eventually buy a piece creates a certain tension for me. Yet, I view making jewelry as a form of meditation, so I try not to be too hard on myself. It helps me clear my mind, and I have come to appreciate its value: it is a space where I can breathe slowly and reconnect with my inner child.

In difficult times, creating can be a quiet form of resistance—or so I once read. Each piece I craft reminds me that, even amidst uncertainty, I can still imagine, choose colors, build, and transform materials into something beautiful. And for now, that is enough to keep me going. Perhaps making jewelry might be helpful for you, too.
