Hello, anime fans. Today I’m bringing you another romantic and rather special anime that I watched when it aired earlier this year. It’s a love story involving both teenagers and adults that didn’t become very popular at the time because of just how unique it is—that, and the lack of Fanservice and the typical clichés found in every popular RomCom. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Iwatobineko, The Invisible Man and His Soon-to-Be Wife is an animated adaptation produced by Project No. 9. Get ready for an anime that’s going to completely sweep you off your feet.

Una historia de amor juvenil y adulto que no logró popularizarse tanto en su momento debido a lo especial que es, eso y la falta de Fanservice y clichés típicos de todo RomCom popular. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Iwatobineko, The Invisible Man and His Soon-to-Be Wife es una adaptación animada producida por el estudio Proyect Nro. 9. Plot
The anime begins by introducing us to Shizuka Yakou, a young, quiet, and shy employee at a small detective agency. Its owner and boss, Akira Tounome, is an invisible man who works as a private investigator handling minor cases in this world where humans and supernatural beings coexist in complete harmony. Despite being her boss, Akira treats Shizuka very kindly; he always knows where she is, even when he disappears completely from the room. However, what she doesn’t know is that, because of her kindness and the way she treats him, he has fallen in love with her.
Trama
El anime inicia presentándonos a Shizuka Yakou, una joven, tranquila y tímida empleada de una pequeña agencia de detectives. Su dueño y jefe, Akira Tounome, es un hombre invisible que trabaja como agente privado atendiendo casos pequeños en este mundo donde los seres humanos y los seres sobrenaturales coexisten juntos y en total armonía. A pesar de ser su jefe, Akira trata de forma muy amable a Shizuka quien siempre sabe dónde se encuentra, aún cuando desaparece por completo de la habitación. Sin embargo, lo que no sabe ella es que debido a su amabilidad y forma de tratarlo se enamora de ella.

I might be exaggerating a bit when I say this anime is “too sappy,” though I do have to admit it has plenty of romantic and innocent moments that make you feel that way. Despite being an anime for young adults, let’s just say it doesn’t have any of the clichés or adult humor you’d expect from your average RomCom. Of course, most of these animes are aimed at teenagers, which is a bit concerning when you think about it. But anyway, the main point here is that the humor we see in this anime is much more innocent and lighthearted than you’d think.
The Invisible Man and His Soon-to-Be Wife is an anime that stands out for not being a grand romantic story packed with drama or unforgettable moments. Nor is it an anime that stands out for its fantastical world teeming with supernatural beings. Personally, I see this anime as a series of events or short stories about the “ordinary” life of a somewhat peculiar couple: an invisible man and a blind woman. Its episodes are mostly a mix of brief, everyday occurrences at this small detective agency.
Puede que exagere un poco con lo de “empalagar” con este anime, aunque sí debo admitir que tiene muchos momentos románticos e inocentes que te hacen sentir así. A pesar de ser un anime para jóvenes adultos, digamos que no posee ningún cliché o humor para adultos que uno esperaría de un RomCom cualquiera. Claro, la mayoría de estos animes están dirigidos a adolescentes, lo cual es un poco preocupante si lo pensamos bien. Pero bueno, el punto principal de esto es que dicho humor que vemos en este anime es mucho más inocente y ligero de lo que uno pensaría.
The Invisibles Man and His Soon-to-Be Wife es un anime que se destaca por no ser una historia romántica grandiosa y repleta de drama o momentos inolvidables. Tampoco es un anime que llegue a resaltar por su mundo fantástico y repleto de seres sobrenaturales. En lo personal considero a este anime como una serie de eventos o historias cortas de la vida “común y corriente” de una pareja un tanto peculiar: un hombre invisible y una mujer ciega. Sus episodios mayormente son una mezcla de cortos eventos del día a día en esta pequeña oficina de detectives.

However, as you’ve surely already noticed, this anime also features certain characters who really stand out. The main couple alone stands out quite a bit in their own way because of how unique they are. But we also have elves, beastmen and beastwomen, and other types of anthropomorphic creatures or animals that we’ll come to know. Yet the ones who stand out the most are those who interact with the protagonists on a daily basis at their workplace. Another noteworthy aspect of these characters is their diversity, which the anime reveals to us in a subtle way.
But clearly, our attention is focused primarily on Akira and Shizuka, who start out as a boss and his employee/colleague and then evolve into something more in the following episodes. When it comes to romance, the anime holds nothing back, giving us episode after episode where we see this couple take their relationship to the next level in a way that most RomCom animes would never dare to do. To give you an example of what I mean, as early as the first episode, they confess their feelings to each other and start dating.
Sin embargo, y como de seguro ya se dieron cuenta, este anime también posee ciertos personajes que resaltan bastante. Ya de por sí la pareja protagonista destaca bastante a su manera por lo peculiares que son. Pero también tenemos a elfos, hombres y mujeres bestias y demás tipos de criaturas o animales antropomórficos que iremos conociendo. Pero los que más resaltan son los que conviven diariamente en el lugar de trabajo de los protagonistas. Otro detalle a resaltar de estos personajes es su diversidad, lo cual es algo que el anime nos lo muestra de forma reservada.
Pero claramente la atención de uno se centra principalmente en Akira y Shizuka, quienes empiezan siendo un jefe con su empleada y colega a luego convertirse en algo más en los siguientes episodios. En lo que respecta al romance, el anime no se reserva para nada, dándonos así un episodio tras otro donde vemos a esta pareja avanzar en su relación de una forma que la mayoría de animes RomCom jamás se atreverían a hacer. Para darles un ejemplo de lo que me refiero con esto, ya en el primer episodio se declaran sus sentimientos y empiezan a salir.

But even with this in mind, the anime shows no signs of drama or of tackling heavy or complicated themes. In fact, most of its episodes have such a slow and relaxed pace that it’s easy to mistake it for a Slice of Life series. Still, it’s clear that its strong point is romance, especially given the abundance of scenes featuring Akira and Shizuka together. It lacks shocking plot twists or anything that really gets your emotions going beyond a couple of heartfelt dialogues and the occasional overly sentimental moment.
While I said it doesn’t tackle heavy themes, it’s true that, despite its appearance, it has a very mature tone when it comes to the daily lives of a young adult couple who are dating. The anime explores themes such as independence, self-esteem, identity, and freedom of expression. It’s interesting how Japan often tells us such human stories through supernatural and inhuman characters, like beast-people or invisible people. But then again, the irony in all of this is what really brings out the charm of watching these kinds of stories.
Pero aún con esto presente, el anime no demuestra tener indicios de drama o de tratar temas densos o complicados. Incluso la mayoría de sus episodios poseen un ritmo tan lento y tranquilo de ver que es fácil confundirlo con un Slice of Life. Aún así, está claro que su punto fuerte es el romance y más con la excelente cantidad de escenas que tiene con Akira y Shizuka juntos. No tiene giros de trama impactantes, ni nada que te eleve la emoción más allá de un par de diálogos emotivos y uno que otro momento empalagoso.
Si bien dije que no tiene temas densos que tratar, sí es cierto que, a pesar de su apariencia, tiene un tono muy maduro en lo que respecta a la vida diaria de una pareja de jóvenes adultos que están saliendo juntos. El anime nos ofrece temas como la independencia, la autoestima, la identidad y la libertad de expresión. Es curioso cómo Japón se acostumbra a contarnos historias tan humanas con personajes sobrenaturales e inhumanos como gente bestia o gente invisible. Pero bueno, la ironía en todo esto es lo que hace resaltar ese encanto en ver este tipo de historias.

For example, in the case of our protagonist and invisible detective, Akira Tounome, we learn quite a bit about him, his past, and his daily life in his hometown—where, interestingly enough, all the invisible people in this world live. It’s fascinating to see the extent to which this anime reveals details about an entire culture of a species like this, contrasting it with humans and highlighting their differences. I’m also struck by the way the character is given certain traumas, such as a fear of the dark.
Another quite interesting case is that of Shizuka Yakou, who, as I mentioned above, is blind. Seeing a character like this in this world is interesting because you’d expect to see certain prejudices, favoritism, and the way she’s treated because of her disability. However, to everyone’s surprise, that’s not the case. Her complete independence makes her more than capable of fending for herself. We can even see that she lives alone in this big city. I suppose what makes this anime special is the way its characters stand out and develop within this beautiful story.
Por ejemplo, en el caso de nuestro protagonista y detective invisible, Akira Tounome, podemos conocer bastante sobre él, su pasado y su costumbre en su ciudad natal donde curiosamente viven todas las personas invisibles de este mundo. Es fascinante ver hasta qué punto este anime nos muestra detalles de toda una cultura de una especie como esta comparada con los humanos con todo y sus diferencias. También me llama la atención la manera en la que le dan ciertos traumas al personaje como lo es el miedo a la oscuridad.
Otro caso bastante interesante es el de Shizuka Yakou quien, como ya dije arriba, es ciega. Ver un personaje así en este mundo es interesante ya que uno espera ver ciertos prejuicios, favoritismos y tratos que ella recibe por su discapacidad. Sin embargo, para sorpresa de todos, no sucede así. Su total capacidad de independencia la hace lo suficientemente capaz de valerse por sí misma. Incluso podemos notar que hasta vive sola en esta gran ciudad. Supongo que lo que hace especial a este anime es la forma en la que sus personajes destacan y se desarrollan en esta hermosa historia.

Another positive aspect of this anime, aside from the total absence of fanservice, is its nearly perfect resolution to everything it tells us. Its story can be considered complete as an adaptation because of its ending. That ending leaves you completely satisfied and even makes you wish for an adult, mature, and responsible relationship like the one we see in this anime. But, well, the sad reality is that life isn’t like these romance animes that spring from purely innocent minds.
Last but not least, there’s also the matter of its audiovisual presentation. The animation in this series is fascinating yet simple or cartoonish. The character designs, the art style, and the bright, varied color palette are top-notch. The camera work, visual effects, and motion effects also give it a very lively feel. The fluidity doesn’t stand out much at first, but it really shines during key moments when we get to enjoy a full-fledged audiovisual spectacle.
The level of detail in the animation, the environments, the landscapes, and the views it shows us is fascinating. We can even notice certain details that almost always go unnoticed, such as the invisible man eating, for example. The anime even has a special episode where we see an action sequence that’s just as excellent as the rest of the episodes. The sound effects aren’t bad either, but I prefer the soundtrack. All in all, it’s a romance anime that’s unique in its style.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the romance, comedy, and supernatural genres.
Otro punto positivo que tiene este anime, aparte de la ausencia total de Fanservice, es su cierre casi perfecto para todo lo que nos cuenta. Su historia es una que podría considerarse completa como adaptación debido a su final. Dicho final te deja completamente satisfecho e incluso hasta te dan ganas de desear tener una relación adulta, madura y responsable como la que vemos en este anime. Pero bueno, lo triste de la realidad es que no es como estos animes de romance que nacen de mentes puramente inocentes.
Por último, pero no menos importante, también está el tema de su apartado audiovisual. La animación que tiene esta serie es fascinante y a la vez sencilla o caricaturesca. Los diseños de los personajes, el estilo de dibujo y la paleta brillante y variada de colores es de lo mejor. Los planos, efectos visuales y efectos de movimiento que tiene también le dan un toque muy animado. La fluidez no resalta mucho al principio, sino en momentos clave donde podemos disfrutar de un completo espectáculo audiovisual.
El nivel de detalles en la animación, los entornos, los paisajes y las vistas que nos muestra es fascinante. Incluso podemos notar ciertos detalles que casi siempre pasan desapercibidos como es el caso del hombre invisible comiendo, por ejemplo. El anime tiene un episodio especial inclusive donde vemos una secuencia de acción tan excelente que el resto de episodios. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, pero me gusta más la banda sonora que tiene. En fin, un anime de romance único en su estilo.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, comedia y sobrenatural.
