Hello, anime fans. Today I’m bringing you another special selection of five animated series that I’ve chosen from among the dozens of romance anime I watched last year. As those of you who follow me probably already know, romance is one of the most popular and overused genres in this industry, just as much as action or even fantasy. There are so many romance animes out there right now that it’s hard to choose which one to watch and hope it’s a masterpiece. Most are just generic and boring.
That’s exactly why I decided to put together this TOP of the five best romance animes from last year that are worth watching. This wasn’t an easy choice to make, since I had to set aside many of the typical elements found in most romance animes. Everything you’ll read below is solely my own opinion. I’ve already reviewed most of the anime I’ll mention below, so you’ll see their names linked to those reviews. If you’re a fan of romance and are looking for something interesting to watch, then I invite you to stick around until the end.
Hola, fanáticos del anime. Hoy les traigo otra selección especial de cinco series animadas que he escogido de entre decenas de animes de romance que he visto en emisión el año pasado. Como seguramente ya sabrán los que me siguen, el romance es uno de los géneros más populares y sobreexplotados de esta industria, tanto como lo es la acción o incluso la fantasía. Actualmente hay tantos animes de romance que es difícil escoger entre todos cuál ver y esperar que sea una obra maestra. La mayoría son solo obras genéricas y aburridas.
Es por esto mismo que decidí hacerles este TOP con los cinco mejores animes de romance que valen la pena ver del año pasado. Esta elección no fue fácil de hacer, ya que tuve que excluir muchos detalles que la mayoría de animes de romance normalmente poseen. Todo lo que leerán a continuación será únicamente mi propia opinión. La mayoría de los animes que mencionaré a continuación ya les he hecho una reseña antes, por lo cual verán sus nombres enlazados con dichas reseñas. Let’s kick off this list with a very traditional romance anime that features an excellent blend of drama, mystery, and comedy, making it a true gem from last year. An anime that went completely unnoticed due to the competition at the time and the little attention it garnered, despite having an interesting story. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Tobirano and illustrated by Mai Murasaki, Betrothed to My Sister's Ex is an anime adaptation produced by LandQ Studios.
The anime tells the story of Marie Shaderan, a young woman who has suffered abuse, mistreatment, and exploitation at the hands of her parents in her own home and who, after coming of age, is sent to marry her recently deceased older sister’s ex-partner. If I could compare this anime to a popular work, I’d say it’s like a Japanese, Otome-style version of Cinderella. Literally, the series has a plot quite similar to the famous fantasy tale, except here there are no fairy godmothers, and its development is much deeper than it appears at first glance.
Empecemos este TOP con un anime de romance muy a lo tradicional con un excelente repertorio de drama, misterio y comedia que lo hacen una joya invaluable del año pasado. Un anime que ha pasado completamente desapercibido debido a la competencia que hubo en su momento y lo poco que llamó la atención, a pesar de poseer una interesante historia. Basada en la serie de novelas ligeras homónimas escritas por Tobirano e ilustradas por Mai Murasaki, Betrothed to My Sister's Ex es una adaptación animada producida por LandQ Studios.
El anime nos cuenta la historia de Marie Shaderan, una joven que ha sufrido de abusos, maltratos y sobreexplotación por parte de sus padres en su propia casa y que, después de cumplir la mayoría de edad, es enviada a casarse con la ex-pareja de su recién difunta hermana mayor. Si pudiera comparar a este anime con alguna obra popular, diría que es como la versión japonesa y Otome de Cenicienta. Literalmente, la serie posee una trama bastante similar a la famosa obra de fantasía, solo que aquí no tenemos a hadas madrinas y su desarrollo es mucho más profundo de lo que parece a simple vista.

There are also many other differences, such as the roles of the parents, the older sister, the husband, and so on. Let’s just say that the only way this anime resembles Cinderella is in everything our protagonist, Marie, has experienced since childhood in her own home. The plot is gripping, especially if you like psychological drama and stories involving blackmail, manipulation, and deception. Each character stands out in their own way, and the romance is perfect, as we see a remarkable development in the relationship between Marie and Prince Kyros. There’s no fanservice or any of those common clichés.
Another thing I really love about this anime is its story, which is complete. This is something that’s highly appreciated since almost all romance animes are incomplete. Here, no story arcs are left hanging, and all the events are resolved in a way that leaves you satisfied. It also has a very satisfying ending with a perfect display of the protagonist’s courage. The animation is no slouch either, standing out mainly in visual aspects such as character designs, the color palette, and the use of light and shadow. The same goes for the soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved 9/10 rating in the romance, drama, mystery, and comedy genres.
También que hay muchas otras diferencias como lo es el tema de los padres, la hermana mayor, el marido, etc. Digamos que en lo único que se parece este anime con Cenicienta es con todo lo que vive nuestra protagonista, Marie, desde pequeña en su propio hogar. La trama te atrapa, sobre todo si te gusta el drama psicológico y los casos de extorsión, manipulación y engaños. Cada uno de los personajes logran resaltar muy bien a su manera y el tema del romance es perfecto ya que vemos un notable desarrollo en la relación que tienen Marie con el príncipe Kyros. No hay Fanservice ni nada de esos clichés comunes.
Otra cosa que me fascina bastante de este anime es su historia, la cual es completa. Esto es algo que se aprecia bastante ya que casi todos los animes de romance están incompletos. Aquí no se extiende ningún arco y todos los acontecimientos se cierran de una forma que uno queda satisfecho. También tiene un final bastante satisfactorio con una demostración perfecta de valor de la protagonista. La animación tampoco se queda atrás, destacando principalmente en los aspectos visuales como lo son los diseños de los personajes, la paleta de colores y el uso de luces y sombras. Lo mismo sucede con la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, drama, misterio y comedia.

Let's move on now to one of the best school romance comedy anime I watched last year. It's an anime that didn't get as much attention as it deserved because of how unique its plot is. But it’s also a fascinating anime that teaches us some valuable life lessons. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Yui Tamura, Yano-kun’s Ordinary Days is an anime adaptation produced by the studio Aija-do. The anime follows the school life of Tsuyoshi Yano, a rather clumsy young man who always ends up hurting himself over the slightest thing.
This plot probably sounds a bit familiar to you, and yes, our protagonist practically suffers from the classic “Murphy’s Law” syndrome, which means he always ends up getting hurt by whatever he does. But unlike other RomCom animes that likely follow this same pattern, what we see here is actually a teenage love story between a clumsy, innocent boy and a responsible, quite expressive girl. What makes this RomCom special isn’t that it’s different from the vast majority—we’re basically seeing the same old love story.
Sigamos ahora con uno de los mejores animes de comedia romántica escolar que he visto el año pasado. Un anime que no llamó tanto la atención como debería debido a lo particular que es su trama. Pero también es un anime fascinante que nos enseña ciertas lecciones valiosas de la vida. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Yui Tamura, Yano-kun's Ordinary Days es una adaptación animada producida por el estudio Aija-do. El anime nos cuenta sobre la vida escolar de Tsuyoshi Yano, un joven bastante torpe que siempre termina lastimándose con cualquier cosa.
Seguramente esta trama te suena un poco familiar por ahí y si, prácticamente nuestro protagonista tiene el típico mal de la “Ley de Murphy” que se trata de terminar lastimándose siempre por cualquier cosa que hace. Pero a diferencia de otros animes RomCom que seguramente poseen este mismo patrón, aquí vemos es en realidad una historia de amor adolescente entre un chico torpe e inocente y una chica responsable y bastante expresiva. Lo que hace especial a este RomCom no es que sea diferente a la gran mayoría, prácticamente vemos la misma historia de amor de siempre.

What makes this anime special is how it tells this teenage love story in a way that’s completely free of malice, hidden messages, double entendres, misunderstandings, or Fanservice. All of this, as surprising and unusual as it may seem, makes it quite special. It’s an anime that focuses more on introducing and developing its main characters, as well as showing the beginning and development of a rather innocent relationship that grows out of friendship and ultimately leads to an internal struggle with self-confidence and society’s judgment of oneself.
What’s fascinating about this anime is that, even with all its humor, it presents a faithful plot, remarkable character development, and a clear demonstration of unconditional love between the characters. The animation is another standout and positive aspect, especially because it really highlights the tender yet detailed animation style. It also features a palette of light and varied colors, and the same goes for the use of light and shadow. But what surprises me most is the animation’s quality in terms of fluidity. The sound effects are just as impressive, as is the soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.2/10 in the romance and comedy genre.
Lo que hace especial a este anime es cómo nos cuentan dicha historia de amor adolescente de una forma que no tiene cabida nada de malicia, mensajes ni diálogos de doble sentido ni ningún tipo de malentendido o Fanservice. Todo esto, por mucho que te sorprenda y extrañe, lo hace bastante especial. Es un anime que se centra más en presentarnos y desarrollar a sus personajes principales, además de ver el inicio y desarrollo de una relación bastante inocente que nace de una amistad y finalmente termina en una lucha interna por la autoconfianza y la opinión que la sociedad tiene hacia uno mismo.
Lo fascinante de este anime es que, aún con todo el humor que posee, nos muestra una trama fiel, un desarrollo notable y una evidente demostración de amor incondicional entre los personajes. La animación es otro de sus puntos destacables y positivos, sobre todo porque resalta bastante el estilo de animación tierno, pero a su vez detallado. También tiene una paleta de colores claros y bien variados, lo mismo sucede con el uso de luces y sombras. Pero lo que más me sorprende es la calidad que tiene la animación en cuanto a fluidez se trata. Los efectos de sonido no se quedan atrás, al igual que la banda sonora.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.2/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.

Let’s now talk about another teen romance anime that, unlike the previous one, actually enjoyed significant popularity in its day for various reasons. It’s an anime that’s just as emotional, entertaining, and pure, with many valuable lessons to be learned. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Saka Mikami, The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity is an animated adaptation produced by the renowned studio CloverWorks. The anime tells the story of Rintaro Tsumugi, a young man attending an all-boys high school located right next to a girls’ school.
Among the many RomCom animes I watched last year, this was one of the ones I was most looking forward to seeing because of how interesting it seemed when I first saw the trailer. After watching it air, it became clear to me why so many people recommended this series. It’s not just the typical love story between two innocent teenagers and all that—no. We also get to witness a story filled with struggles against a prejudiced society, a friendship that has transcended the criticism and opinions of friends, family, and classmates, and a perfect demonstration of self-confidence and personal growth.
Hablemos ahora de otro anime de romance adolescente que, a diferencia del anterior, este sí tuvo una notable popularidad en su momento debido a distintos motivos. Un anime igual de emotivo, entretenido, puro y con muy buenas lección valiosas por extraer. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Saka Mikami, The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity es una adaptación animada producida por el famoso estudio CloverWorks. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Rintaro Tsumugi, un joven que estudia en una preparatoria para hombres que se encuentra justo al lado de una escuela para mujeres.
Entre tantos animes RomCom que he visto el año pasado, este fue uno de los que más esperaba ver debido a lo interesante que me pareció al momento de ver su primer tráiler. Luego de verla en emisión, me quedó claro el por qué tanta gente recomendaba esta obra. No solo vemos la típica historia de amor entre dos adolescentes inocentes y toda la cosa, no. Sino que también podemos presenciar una historia repleta de luchas contra una sociedad prejuiciosa, una amistad que ha trascendido las críticas y la opinión de amigos, familiares, compañeros de clase y una demostración perfecta de autoconfianza y desarrollo personal.

This anime stands out not only for being a RomCom free of Fanservice, Harems, and the usual cheap clichés, but also for the way it develops its characters, giving us two sides of a story as seen through the eyes of two completely different people. As tender, romantic, sweet, and innocent as the relationship between Rintaro and Kaoruko may seem, it’s worth mentioning the interesting variety of themes the series explores, such as what it’s like to live in an overprotective family, to live without anything that excites you, or to live in a prejudiced society.
Another thing I really like—and which it shares with the previous anime I’ve mentioned—is that long-awaited climax we always hope to see in a love story. That’s right, we’re talking about the famous “love confession,” something most RomCom anime always save for the end or for a future season that never comes. That’s not the case here, and that’s something I really appreciate. Another thing worth highlighting is the animation. In this case, there’s nothing to complain about, especially with CloverWorks at the helm. The audiovisual quality is excellent, from the character design, color palette, and shots to the soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating when it comes to the romance and comedy genre.
Este anime no solo se destaca por ser un RomCom libre de Fanservice, Harems y clichés baratos de siempre; sino que también llama la atención la forma en la que se desarrollan a sus personajes, dándonos dos lados de una historia, vista por dos personas completamente diferentes. Por muy tierno, romántico, dulce e inocente que parezca dicha relación que vemos desarrollarse entre Rintaro y Kaoruko, hay que mencionar la interesante variedad de temas que la misma obra nos muestra como lo es vivir en una familia sobreprotectora, vivir sin nada que te emocione o vivir en una sociedad prejuiciosa.
Otra cosa que me gusta mucho y que a su vez comparte con los anteriores animes que les he hablado es ese esperado desenlace que uno busca siempre ver en una historia de amor. Así es, estamos hablando de la famosa “declaración de amor”, algo que la mayoría de animes RomCom dejan siempre para el final o para una futura temporada que nunca llegará. Aquí no sucede así y eso es algo que aprecio un montón. Otra cosa a destacar bastante es su animación. En este caso no hay nada de qué quejarse y menos teniendo a CloverWorks a cargo. La calidad audiovisual es excelente, desde el diseño de los personajes, la paleta de colores y planos hasta la banda sonora que posee.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.

Let’s move on to what is—in my opinion—the best teen romance and school anime that aired last year. It’s a series that went somewhat unnoticed, even though it features one of the most emotional, dramatic, and profound stories currently available in the shōjo genre. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Mayu Murata, Honey Lemon Soda is a TV series produced by TMS Entertainment and animated by J.C.Staff. The anime tells the story of Uka Ishimori, a shy and reserved high school student who struggles with serious self-esteem issues.
I said it back then and I’ll say it again now: this is one of the best school romance animes I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’m not exaggerating when I say this, because this seemingly simple RomCom actually has a story of love, personal growth, and overcoming obstacles that’s absolutely worth watching. It’s remarkable when a romance anime isn’t a Shōnen series, since it lacks any Fanservice, Harems, cheap clichés, or predictable plots. But beyond that, there’s something that really fascinates me: when a romance anime stands out above all else for the unique way it presents and develops its characters.
Continuemos con el que es -para mí- el mejor anime de romance adolescente y escolar que se ha emitido el año pasado. Una obra que pasó un tanto desapercibida, a pesar de que tiene una de las historias más emotivas, dramáticas y profundas que se pueden encontrar en la demografía Shōjo actualmente. Basada en la serie de manga homónima escrita e ilustrada por Mayu Murata, Honey Lemon Soda es una serie de televisión producida por TMS Entertainment y animada por J.C.Staff. El anime nos cuenta la historia de Uka Ishimori, una estudiante de preparatoria tímida y poco expresiva que tiene serios problemas de autoestima.
Lo dije en su momento y lo volveré a decir ahora: este es de los mejores animes de romance escolares que he visto en mi vida. Y no estoy exagerando cuando digo esto ya que este RomCom todo simple que aparenta ser posee una historia de amor, desarrollo y superación que vale toda la pena del mundo ver. Es notable cuando un anime RomCom no es Shōnen al ver que no posee nada de Fanservice, Harems ni clichés baratos o tramas predecibles. Pero además de esto, hay algo que sí me fascina bastante y es cuando un anime de romance logra destacarse más que nada por la forma tan particular de presentar y desarrollar a sus personajes.

In the case of Honey Lemon Soda, we meet a protagonist who faces more than one serious problem to tackle. As we get to know her little by little, it becomes easier for us to warm up to her. But that’s not all—there’s also her love interest: a rebellious boy with blond hair and blue eyes who lives life on his own terms. His presence and influence have a profound effect on our protagonist, and unlike many male characters, Kai Miura highlights both the positive aspects and the problems Uka must resolve in her life in order to be happy. In other words, he doesn’t just focus on winning our protagonist’s heart—he does much more than that.
The relationship and character development we see in this anime surpass even the other works we mentioned in this TOP list. Not just because it has that touch of drama woven into the plot, but because of the way it addresses the various problems a teenager faces in a society like this. The anime also has its plot twists and its epic, emotionally charged moments that, honestly, even brought a tear to my eye—and that’s highly appreciated. The animation, while not the best in the world, manages to stand out thanks to its very well-crafted production. The color palette, lighting, shadows, character designs, sound effects, and soundtrack are particularly noteworthy.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.8/10 in terms of the romance, drama, and comedy genres.
En el caso de Honey Lemon Soda podemos conocer a una protagonista con la que tendremos más de un problema serio por abordar. Mientras la conocemos poco a poco, más fácil nos es familiarizarnos con ella. Pero no solo está eso, sino que también tenemos a su interés amoroso: un chico rebelde de cabello rubio y ojos azules que vive su vida a su manera. Su presencia e influencia cala bien hondo en nuestra protagonista y, a diferencia de muchos personajes masculinos, Kai Miura saca a relucir los puntos positivos y los problemas que Uka tiene que resolver en su vida para así ser feliz. O sea, no solo se centra en enamorar a nuestra protagonista, sino que hace mucho más que eso.
Dicha relación y desarrollo que vemos en este anime supera incluso a las demás obras que mencionamos en este TOP. No solo porque tenga ese toque de drama bien incrustado en la trama, sino por la manera en la que aborda los distintos problemas que vive un adolescente en una sociedad como ésta. El anime también tiene sus giros de trama y sus momentos épicos y repletos de emociones que, honestamente, hasta me hicieron sacar una lágrima y eso se valora bastante. La animación, si bien no es la mejor del mundo, logra destacarse por tener cierta producción muy bien elaborada. La paleta de colores, luces, sombras, diseños de los personajes, efectos de sonido y banda sonora son de lo más destacable.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.8/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, drama y comedia.

To wrap up this fantastic TOP list, I couldn’t think of a better way to do it than by telling you about the amazing return of one of my all-time favorite anime series. It’s an anime that I would easily rank among the best romance anime I’ve ever seen—and believe me, I’ve watched a lot of them, as you can all attest. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Kēji Mizoguchi, Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus is produced by the famous studio CloverWorks. We continue with the story of Sakuta Asuzagawa, who has entered college to keep solving cases of “Adolescence Syndrome.”
Just to make it clear: this is the second season of the famous anime Rascal Does Not Dream, which aired in late 2018. Also known as “Bunny Girl Senpai,” this anime obviously caught my attention at the time when I was looking for something in the romance genre that would grab me. And what I thought would be the typical teenage love story with Fanservice and all that turned out to be one of the best works of the genre I’ve ever seen. I admit that yes, it has its Fanservice and even, to a certain extent, traces of a Harem and the occasional cliché at the beginning, but even so, its story is worth getting to know.
Para finalizar este grandioso TOP no encontré una mejor manera de hacerlo que hablándoles del grandioso regreso de uno de mis animes favoritos de toda la vida. Un anime que, fácilmente, lo catalogaría como uno de los mejores animes de romance que he visto. Y eso que he visto muchos animes de romance, cosa que pueden confirmar ustedes mismos. Basada en la serie de novelas ligeras homónimas escritas por Hajime Kamoshida e ilustradas por Kēji Mizoguchi, Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus está producida por el famoso estudio CloverWorks. Continuamos con la historia de Sakuta Asuzagawa, quien ha entrado a la universidad para seguir resolviendo casos de “Síndrome de la Adolescencia”.
Solo para dejarles bien en claro: esta es la segunda temporada del famoso anime Rascal Does Not Dream que se emitió a finales del 2018. También conocido por el nombre de “Bunny Girl Senpai”, este anime me llamó la atención evidentemente en su momento cuando buscaba qué ver del género de romance que me llame la atención. Y de lo que creí que sería la típica historia de amor adolescente con Fanservice y toda la cosa se convirtió en una de las mejores obras del género que he visto en mi vida. Admito que sí, tiene su Fanservice y hasta en cierto modo también cuenta con vestigios de Harem y uno que otro cliché al principio, pero aún así su historia vale la pena conocerla.

Not only because it has an interesting storyline that skillfully explores the typical struggles faced by every high school student, but also because it incorporates supernatural elements such as the well-known “Adolescence Syndrome.” With plenty of drama, some sci-fi, a bit of mystery, and even a touch of suspense, this anime has transformed the typical teenage love story into a fantastic tale about the life of a teenager with some rather unique problems to solve. While romance isn’t its primary genre, it devotes significant attention to it throughout much of the plot, especially in the relationship between Sakuta and Mai as it unfolds across different eras and seasons.
Another thing I’d like to mention is that, before watching this second season I’m sharing in this TOP list, you not only need to watch the first season but also the three movies released between 2019 and 2024. I’m not exaggerating when I say that watching this anime will be the best decision you’ll ever make. A work that could be considered a “masterpiece” only if it were fully adapted (which will happen soon). I’m not just saying this because of its story, characters, and various narrative elements; but also because of its animation and production by CloverWorks. Its quality is unmatched, maintaining the high standard it had from the very beginning.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in the romance, comedy, drama, and supernatural genres.
No solo porque tiene una narrativa interesante que juega muy bien con los típicos problemas que vive todo adolescente de preparatoria, sino que a esto se le suma elementos sobrenaturales como lo es el conocido “Síndrome de la Adolescencia”. Con mucho drama, algo de ciencia ficción, un poco de misterio y hasta un toque de suspenso; este anime ha hecho de la típica historia de amor adolescente en una historia fantástica de la vida de un adolescente con problemas un tanto especiales a resolver. Si bien no tiene como principal género al romance, le da su excelente atención en gran parte de la trama, en especial en la relación que vemos entre Sakuta y Mai a lo largo de las distintas épocas y temporadas.
Otra cosa que me gustaría mencionarles es que, antes que ver esta segunda temporada que les comparto en este TOP, no solo tienen que ver la primera temporada, sino que también tendrán que ver las tres películas que sacaron entre 2019 y 2024. No exagero cuando les digo que ver este anime será la mejor decisión que tomarán en toda su vida. Una obra que se podría considerar “obra maestra” solo si estuviera adaptada por completo (cosa que pronto sucederá). No solo lo digo por su historia, personajes y distintos elementos narrativos; sino también por su animación y producción hechas por CloverWorks. La calidad que tiene es insuperable, manteniendo el alto nivel que tuvo desde el principio.
Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance, comedia, drama y sobrenatural.
