Located in the heart of Alto Minho, between hills and rivers, the village of Paredes de Coura is a true refuge for those seeking tranquility, breathtaking landscapes and a good dose of Minho culture. Our visit to this charming village was a very pleasant surprise.

Situada no coração do Alto Minho, entre montes e rios, a vila de Paredes de Coura é um verdadeiro refúgio para quem procura tranquilidade, paisagens de cortar a respiração e uma boa dose de cultura minhota. A nossa visita a esta vila encantadora foi uma surpresa muito agradável.
Upon arrival, we are greeted by a landscape that seems to have stopped in time. Green dominates: the fields, the hills, the banks of the Coura River, which runs calmly through the town. The village itself is small but full of charm. The cobblestone streets, the granite houses and the small cafes with terraces with a few people enjoying the sun.

Ao chegar, somos recebidos por uma paisagem que parece ter parado no tempo. O verde domina: os campos, os montes, as margens do rio Coura, que corre sereno ao longo da vila. A vila em si é pequena, mas cheia de charme. As ruas de calçada, as casas de granito e os pequenos cafés com esplanadas com algumas pessoas a aproveitar o sol.
Paredes de Coura is also a destination with history. Traces of human life in this region date back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the dolmens and forts that can be visited in the surrounding area. One of the most interesting is Castro de Cossourado, a fortified settlement from the Iron Age.

In the center of the town, the Igreja Matriz de Paredes de Coura stands out, with medieval origins, and the beautiful building of the old prison, which today houses the Cultural Center. Here you can learn more about the local heritage, including traditions, costumes and ancient crafts.

But of course, you can't talk about Paredes de Coura without mentioning the event that, every summer, completely transforms the village: the iconic Paredes de Coura Festival, held next to the Taboão river beach. Since 1993, it has attracted thousands of people of all ages and from all corners of the world, creating a unique atmosphere of communion between nature and music. Big names such as Arcade Fire, Pixies, Nick Cave, among many others, have already passed through here. But more than the music, it is the atmosphere that leaves its mark on those who pass by.

Mas claro, não se pode falar de Paredes de Coura sem mencionar o evento que, todos os verões, transforma completamente a vila: o icónico Festival Paredes de Coura, realizado junto à praia fluvial do Taboão. Desde 1993, atrai milhares de pessoas de todas as idades e de vários cantos do mundo, criando uma atmosfera única de comunhão entre natureza e música. Já passaram por aqui nomes grandes como Arcade Fire, Pixies, Nick Cave, entre muitos outros. Mas mais do que a música, é o ambiente que marca quem por lá passa.
During the festival days, the village comes alive. The streets are full of people, cafes and restaurants stay open late, and local hospitality is put to the test. Those who prefer a more peaceful experience can explore the region's trails, take a dip in the waters of the Coura or simply relax with a craft beer while watching the sunset.

Durante os dias do festival, a vila ganha vida. As ruas enchem-se de pessoas, os cafés e restaurantes ficam abertos até mais tarde, e a hospitalidade local é posta à prova. Quem prefere uma experiência mais tranquila pode explorar os trilhos da região, dar uns mergulhos nas águas do Coura ou simplesmente relaxar com uma cerveja artesanal a ver o pôr-do-sol.
The gastronomy, as in the whole of Minho, is very strong. Don't forget to try the roast kid, the rice with sarrabulho or the sausages. For dessert, a crème brûlée or a slice of traditional cake can be good options.

A gastronomia, como em todo o Minho, é fortíssima. Não deixem de provar o cabrito assado, o arroz de sarrabulho ou os enchidos. Para sobremesa, um leite-creme queimado ou uma fatia de bolo tradicional podem ser boas opções.
Paredes de Coura is, without a doubt, a village with soul, where you can breathe nature, culture and a rare authenticity. I left there wanting to go back, maybe during the festival :-)
