Regardless of the nature of your business activities, you have a variety of tasks to complete. Of course, these vary from business to business. However, the following rule is so universal that I am confident you will not find a business activity where this rule does not apply.

It may not be necessary or useful to adhere to exact thirds within your business. You will have to discover for yourself whether a third is not necessary here or there, or whether it makes sense to define a third as larger.

I considered explaining the “why” behind each third, but decided against it because I believe that if you discover the “why” yourself, you will be better able to translate the relevance and necessity of these points for yourself, integrate them into your business activities, and clarify them for yourself.

In this third, you do administrative tasks. To illustrate the necessity of this third, I will list a few things that fall within it: accounting, paperwork and official correspondence, controlling, management, planning, and all those kinds of things. Continuing education; learning and researching, discovering and integrating new things, staying up to date with current developments, further developing your own skills or toolbox. Conducting market and customer analysis.

This is where you ultimately earn your money. This is where you generate the hours or products that your customers and consumers ultimately pay for. This is where you generate what you exchange for value. (Yes, research results from the previous third could also be sold—but ultimately, you also have to create a marketable product for this in this third.) Marketing and advertising your activities and products also fall into this third.

And even though I wanted to leave it up to you to understand these points, I want to make one thing clear: this third has to finance the other two thirds. The financing of the previous two thirds must be secured in this third.

(Ja, auch Forschungsergebnisse aus dem vorherigen Drittel könnten sich verkaufen lassen - aber letztlich musst du auch dafür hier in diesem Drittel ein vermarktbares Produkt erstellen.) Aber auch Vermarktung und Bewerbung deiner Tätigkeiten und Produkte sind in diesem Drittel anzusiedeln.

Und auch wenn ich dir das Begreifen dieser Punkte selbst überlassen wollte, will ich dir eines verdeutlichen: dieses Drittel hier muss die anderen Drittel finanzieren. Die Finanzierung der vorherigen Drittel muss in diesem Drittel sichergestellt werden.

“You could cut out the third on training and put that time into sales.” But then it's likely that you might generate a lot of income now, but in the long run, your product or service maybe won't stay marketable.
