I think it's a bit strange to start off by confessing something I've been feeling for a very long time. I don't know if it's cliché or not, and I don't intend to argue about that. However, I do think being a father these days is quite intense—and I'm not talking about money; let me explain.
We all have family values to cultivate and instill in our children. Personally, I am a father only to girls, because that is how God intended it. But I used to believe that having boys would be easier for me, because I understood upbringing and the way I grew up as a man. So, raising a boy would be easy because I 'already had the experience and the manual,' but things didn't turn out as I thought or imagined.
Both of my parents passed away, and three months later, my wife became pregnant. That was a super strange whirlwind of emotions for me; I didn't know how to handle everything. After a while, my wife got pregnant again. However, when they were born, what surprised me was that I now had two little girls—two women whom I didn't know how to raise, help grow, or educate. I was afraid to bathe them, to hold them, or to do anything because I viewed them as very delicate. I've already overcome that barrier thanks to my wife, and that brings us to today.
I think the world is very difficult in every sense, and I truly believe that a father of girls must be a protective, strong, and perhaps physically fit man. But there are still things I don't know or understand, like: How will I know if I'm doing a good job? How should I discipline them as young women? I feel these are things I ultimately won't know or understand. I also often think that if my parents were still alive, everything would be easier, because parents always know how to give the best advice for those things—or at least that's what some people say.
