English version

Walking along Bolívar Street, from the town centre to the Antonio Patricio de Alcalá Hospital, one comes across María Manuela de Alcalá Square. She was not only the mother of Antonio José de Sucre, but also the grandniece of the renowned priest and humanist after whom Cumaná’s main healthcare centre is named.

In its heyday, this square featured a bust and a colourful children’s playground, as well as many trees and green spaces. But now what stands out most is its barrenness; the lack of water has caused the ornamental plants to wither. Furthermore, the playground has been removed, leaving a large patch of barren earth as a reminder of what once was.

The plinth and plaque are still there; they state that the site was opened to mark International Women’s Day in 2003. It is precisely from that time that it is remembered as a very attractive spot due to its design and location, as it lies opposite the UTOC orthopaedic clinic, the former bowling alley, the INCES, a very popular chemist’s and a poultry shop that has since closed down.

In 2015, a major refurbishment took place, giving it a more modern look. I remember that the large children’s playground was still there, but it had been painted in many colours; it took up almost half the square and it was a pleasure to watch the children striving to complete an obstacle course.

Gradually, everything has disappeared, except for the leafiest trees. In the early hours of the morning, the area is bustling with activity due to the breakfast and fresh juice stalls set up at one end of the square on Calle Bolívar, as on the other side stands the Vela de Coro building and the Corporiente slope leading up to the Museo del Mar.

María Manuela de Alcalá Square is usually referred to as the UTOC square, and whilst its glory days are long gone, there is still a certain sense of peace here, ideal for relaxing in the shade of the trees and listening to the birdsong.
