Hi, my fellow needleworkers! And Merry Christmas to you all in advance. I'm excited to share my entry for the “Needlework Your Christmas” contest. While pondering on what to create for this contest, I decided to do a needlework art rather than my regular sewing. I thought about bringing hive and Christmas together and I envisioned the hive logo wearing a Christmas cap.

For this project, I made a polychrome hive logo using the patchwork technique. The idea of the multi-coloured hive logo was to illustrate the diverse communities within hive and unite them all under the hive logo. The image of the hive logo wearing a Christmas cap represents the hive community coming together to celebrate the merriness of the holiday season.

After I was done, I realised it didn't just look like needlework art, it looked like an unconventional piece of art. I love the contrasting colours; the weirdness and the ununiformed stitches which made it look more real showing the genuine struggle of sewing each piece of fabric together.

Initially, I wanted to make a functional tote bag with it but after I finished I decided to leave it as a standalone artwork and perhaps frame it to showcase the holiday spirit and the community that inspired it.

The process

I sketched out my design

I cut my main fabric for the tote bag I wanted to make initially. I use a muslin fabric for this

Then I ironed the stay interface on the selected part I'm using for my needlework. This will make the material steady.

I pined the sketch that I made to the part where I infused the interface.

Then I cut square-shaped pieces of different colour fabrics for my patchwork

I threaded my needle and began to sew. I used a back stitch in sewing

I sew the patches following the hive logo.

After, I sew the Christmas cap. I used white and red silk.

I removed the sketch paper I used as a template and this is the finished look.
