Perfect square

“Get it through your head, Ryan, I don’t love you.” Rose pushed him away violently.

“I’m sorry, Rose, I’m drunk, and I don’t know what I’m doing.” Ryan stood up unsteadily.

“I’m going home. I’m tired, and I want to sleep.” Rose stood up, furious.

“Rose, Rose, wait for me—I’ll take you home.” Ryan ran quickly after her.

The cool, starry night welcomed them. Rose, flustered, looked for a taxi. The cars looked like glowing ants speeding down the street. Ryan caught up to Rose, staggering as he walked.

“Taxi, taxi!” Rose raised her arm frantically.

“Rose, Rose, I’ll drive you—wait.” Ryan took her hand.

“Let go of me, Ryan, and go home—you’re way too drunk.” Rose pulled her hand away from Ryan’s. “I knew this night out at the club was a bad idea. I knew you’d take advantage of the moment to keep pushing it.”

“Rose, forgive me—I didn’t mean to do that; I was driven by that damn liquor. I respect you so much.” Ryan took her by the arms.

“Let go of me, let go of me!” Rose screamed furiously.

At that moment, a tall, burly, and handsome man appeared out of nowhere and said in a piercing voice:

“Let her go, or you’ll have me to deal with.”

Ryan and Rose stared in astonishment at the imposing man.

“Don’t meddle in what’s none of your business.”

Ryan lunged at the man, who reacted to the charge by landing a powerful punch to the drunk man’s jaw, sending him crashing face-first to the ground. The man turned to Rose.

“Are you all right?” The man offered a gentle smile.

Rose was spellbound by the ruggedly handsome man and lost herself in those light honey-colored eyes.

“Yes, don’t worry.” Rose flashed a nervous smile. “You didn’t have to do that—he’s just a friend.”

“Well, I’d been watching for a while, and that man looked like he was harassing you.”

“No, he’s just a drunken fool. Haha.” Rose smoothed her curly hair with her hand.

Ryan stood up and saw the man with Rose, then ran off, disappearing into the dark horizon. Rose and the man looked at Ryan and burst into hearty laughter.

“By the way, my name is Román.” He held out his hand to her.

“I’m Rose. Nice to meet you.”

“You have a beautiful name.” Román raised his arm and hailed a taxi.

“Thank you so much, Román.” Rose got into the car, her eyes still sparkling like shining stars.

Before Rose closed the door, Román handed her a piece of paper and flashed that charming smile. Rose tucked the little piece of paper away, returned his smile, and waved her delicate hand in farewell. The next day, Rose looked at the number written on the paper. She hesitated, then decided to call Román.

That call marked the beginning of a relationship in which Rose felt fulfilled. She hadn’t felt that happy in a long time. Her failures in past relationships had been forgotten. Now she saw Román as her future—a man unlike any other.

Meanwhile, lurking in the shadows was Ryan, closely watching the development of the relationship between Román and Rose. He was waiting for the right moment to remove Román from Rose's life.

The moment Ryan had been waiting for seemed to have arrived. By a stroke of luck, he spotted Román with a girl; Ryan’s eyes sparkled, and he grinned from ear to ear. He immediately pulled out his cell phone and started recording. It was a wonderful sight for him as he watched Román hug the woman and hold her hands. The couple was very affectionate, and the lens of Ryan’s cell phone didn’t miss a single detail of the scene.

The next day, Ryan arrived at Rose’s apartment.

“Rose, Rose, I have something very important to show you.” Ryan held up his cell phone through the peephole in the door.

“Please, Ryan, I don’t want to talk to you. Go away.” Rose opened the door just a crack.

“Look at this…” Ryan pressed play on the video.

Rose felt her world crumbling as she watched those frames, which tore at her soul. Rose opened the door and let Ryan in; she continued watching the video closely, while tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. Ryan cradled the heartbroken woman’s face against his chest.

“Rose, that man wasn’t a good person—ever since that day of the altercation, he’s shown what he’s capable of.” Ryan tenderly stroked Rose’s red hair.

“I was a fool. Why does this always happen to me? I’m not a bad person.” Rose continued to cry inconsolably.

“Rose, none of those men appreciate what a wonderful woman you are. That wretch Román doesn’t deserve a single tear from you.” Ryan lifted Rose’s face.

“I’m not very good at choosing men, it seems.” Rose lowered her head again.

“Maybe you’re not looking at the one who truly loves you.” Ryan lifted Rose’s face once more.

Rose stared at him intently with her green eyes. Slowly, Ryan brought his lips closer to hers. Rose let herself be carried away as if by an emotional spell that had taken hold of her in that moment. For a microsecond, the image of Román flashed before her eyes, and Rose snapped back to reality, shaking her head.

“Please, Ryan, go. I need to think about a lot of things.” Rose got up from the couch and cupped her face in her hands as she disappeared into her bedroom.

Ryan was left alone in the living room, staring at the cedar door that was closing behind the distraught woman. With nothing else to do, Ryan left the apartment with his head down.

That night, Ryan’s thoughts swirled through every corner of his mind, and he wondered if he’d done the right thing; with that anguish, he went to sleep. The next day, he arrived at the apartment and saw several police officers and paramedics. There was a great commotion at that moment, when suddenly he saw Román come out.

An uncontrollable rage swept over Ryan, and he lunged at him, grabbing him by the neck.

“What have you done, you bastard?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I just came to see Rose since she wasn’t answering my calls. I found the door ajar, went in, and found Rose unconscious in bed.” Tears streamed down Román’s cheeks. “The paramedics say it’s a drug overdose.”

Upon hearing this, Ryan let go of Román and stood there stunned.

“It’s all your fault. Rose was so heartbroken to see you cheating on her that she did something so despicable.” Ryan showed him the video.

Román stared at the cell phone in disbelief.

“No, that’s not true.” Román ran out of the building.

A few hours later, Ryan walked into Rose’s room, where she was recovering.

“Hey, sleepyhead. How are you?” Ryan forced a smile.

“Fine.” Rose looked listless.

“You gave me quite a scare.” Ryan took Rose’s hand.

Just then, Román walked into the room with a woman. Ryan and Rose looked at them.

“What are you doing here?” Ryan snapped at Román.

“Let me explain everything. Apparently, there was a misunderstanding.” Román pushed Ryan aside. “This is Lucy, my sister—she arrived unexpectedly two days ago.”

Rose shed a few tears, and Román hugged her, while Ryan watched the couple and, in that moment, realized he had lost Rose forever—and let her go. He left the room with his head down and then heard a sweet voice.

“Hey, you forgot this.” Lucy handed him his cell phone with a charming smile.

Román felt a ray of light in that moment of anguish. A few days later, Rose and Román were married in a beautiful, fairy-tale-like ceremony, while Ryan, together with Lucy, had finally found the love he deserved.

Cuadrado perfecto

«Entiéndelo, Ryan, no te amo».

«Me voy a casa, estoy cansada y quiero dormir».

Dudaba y después decidió llamar a Román.

Yo no soy mala».

«Tal vez no miras a quien realmente te ama».

«¿Qué has hecho, maldito?».

«¿Qué haces aquí?», Ryan increpaba a Román.
