I was eating my dinner and was thinking back to the prompt for day 26. I was wondering aloud at that point what I was getting myself into over my wife's soup being too salty, she said it was fine, everyone else enjoyed it, the saltiness really bothered me just because it was too much. I don't like too much salt in my soup, I love salt in my food, but there's no way to get rid of the excess salt once it's in there, so I had to take it as it was. I don't mind salty food, but moderation is key for me.

As an older man I have come to realize that sugary foods and drinks are obviously meant for kids, and adults who cannot control their sugar intake are probably not paying much attention to their health. Even children with an addiction to sugar are at serious risk.

Now back to my childhood when Nasco biscuits were my absolute favorite. All children loved them for being sweet. The sugar content was so appealing that if you offered a chance you could probably finish an entire carton of 24 packets of biscuits if given the chance.

The effects of my childhood sugar addiction remain with me today. I have had to get tooth extractions because the tooth hurt way too much due to all my tooth sugar eating, extreme consumption of sugar. I started to have dental cavities and that remained a problem since childhood through my youth.

Basically salt and sugar are different in how our taste buds react to them. With salt there's a natural shelf life, too much salt makes food taste bad. With sugar there 's another shelf life, a lot more sugar makes food taste better and tastes sweeter. That is exactly the reason many people have trouble cutting back on sugar.

Now as an adult I don't eat or drink anything sugary, I pretty much don't put junk food on the table or drink any soft drinks like Coke or Fanta unless it is a special occasion, even then my wife will get to it and take it away. Even with tea I have come to accept the fact that instead of sugar I use lots of milk to give it an extra kick.

There’s a lot I have learned from this journey and how decisions we make add up over time. What once was enjoyable in the early days of my life, at age 8, becomes my reminder of the need to do things in moderation. Also there’s my relationship with salt and sugar, it shapes my daily life, from simple dinner conversation to my cup of tea.

My wife’s always watchful eye, and the way I make my morning cup of tea are only the tip of the iceberg of how I have grown up in my relationship with taste. Looking back on those Nasco biscuits and my dental problems, I can see that beyond the purely sugar aspect, they were pointing to how our tastes and choices change organically as we grow older.
