Romanescu Park, the largest green expanse in Craiova, but also in Romania (seen by day), part I

Hello travelers

In my last blog I was showing you pictures exactly from the Danube shore, I saw that you liked it and I thank you once again to all of you who visited it, then I was telling you that I did not indicate our final destination, so here it is time in this blog to reveal the city that for a few days will be our host.

I'm curious if among those who visit my blog has anyone heard of Craiova or this place is also known as the Citadel of Bania.

Yes, we're finally going to Craiova, yupiiiii.

In recent years I noticed from the online environment that this city has changed a lot, and began to attract tourists from many parts of the world, more specifically in recent years Craiova has become known for organizing the Christmas Market and Easter Market.

As far as I remember, last year's Christmas Market took second place in Europe in the category of the most beautiful market.

We wanted to go there too, to see the Christmas Market (to see what makes it so spectacular) but unfortunately we didn't make it because the prices of accommodation in the city were astronomical even at these astronomical prices the hotels were full.

Instead, this year we somehow managed to find accommodation at a decent price this year (however, the price was quite high compared to what it offered), I will write about the hotel in a future post.

The distance from home to Craiova was about 390 km which we covered in about six and a half hours, on a fairly small stretch we had two pieces of highway (A1, A6), the rest were ordinary roads.

Let the adventure begin.

From the hotel where we stayed and until the entrance to the park Romanescu we walked on foot, this was also the purpose of taking this accommodation because it was in the center and we could move on foot, with personal car was excluded to move through the city, it was so crowded that we lost a lot of time in traffic.

Come with us to visit the largest park in Eastern Europe, an impressive oasis of greenery.

I have to admit that I didn't even enter the park and I was already speechless, the entrance to the park was monumental, what was waiting for us inside.

A plus is that this park is free to visit, and a minus is that we didn't find a brochure that showed us the directions to visit all the sights in this park (it has many sights that we will pass by), we used google map.

On the other hand, if we didn't find any leaflets at the entrance, after a few steps inside the park we found signposts to some of the sights.

Below is some interesting information about Romanescu Park.

It covers about 90 ha, with green areas, alleys and wooded areas, making it the largest urban green area in Romania.
It was inaugurated in 1903 in the presence of King Charles I.
The landscape architect Edouard Redont took the design of the future Romanescu Park to the International Exhibition in Paris (1900), and the project was awarded the Gold Medal.
The park was designed in a romantic style, a synthesis of architecture and landscape architecture.
In 1930, the park received the name "N. P. Romanescu Park"
Subsequently, new components were added: the entrance gate, fencing, the pier was extended, the lighting was modernized, and a 1050 sq.m. greenhouse was built.

The components of the park have been preserved over time, in accordance with the original concept of landscape architect Redont.
Within the landscaped ensemble, there are elements such as: the water courses over 1970 m long, the alleys on almost 27 km long, the monumental entrance, the Romanescu monument, the Bibescu House, the Iron Kiosk, the medieval castle, the lake and the pier, the impressive Suspension Bridge, the waterfalls, the Great Lake, the Zoo, the Hippodrome, the Velodrome, the summer theater and numerous statues and groups of statues, some belonging to famous artists (Brâncuși or Jalea).
In 1943, a bust of N. Romanescu was erected at the main entrance to pay homage to the man who was closely involved in the realization of the park.

From what I've read on the internet the chosen theme for the Easter market held in Romanescu Park is "Carnival of Venice".

Let's see if the organizers managed to organize the fair like the Venice Carnival.

Another sight that I couldn't miss is the lake in the middle of the park, the lake is surrounded by flower areas, something dreamy, I really have to admit that I have never seen such a park anywhere else.

We go to the next two sights, the Suspension Bridge and the Enchanted Castle.

Both locations are the center of attention for tourists visiting the park, so I had to allocate more time for photos here, but at the enchanted castle I didn't have access to the inside, as there is a bar downstairs and there were many tables in front of the castle, so you will only see it from the outside.
