Here's something cool I learnt today.. But first let's start with a really old photo!
So what is this?
This is the largest silver nugget ever mined! It was discovered in Aspen in 1894 and weighed around 1,840 pounds. That's about 830 kilos and was found to be about 96 % pure silver. That's one crazy piece of sterlin if you ask me ๐๐๐
In melting value and with today's spot price, that rock would be worth about
581.000 USD. Not bad. Not bad at all!
The nugget was mined in the Smuggler Mine which is located on the slopes of Smuggler Mountain, on the north edge of Aspen, Colorado, United States. Smuggler mine is one of the oldest silver mines in the area, and one of the few that are still operating from Aspen's early boom years.
Now imagine if this rock was actually made of gold. That would make it a 50 fucking million dollars rock ๐๐๐
But in case you are curious... The biggest gold nugget ever found was "Welcome Stranger" and I really can't think off a more fitting name!
It had a weight of about 241 lbs (about 110 kg) when it was first pulled out of the ground and ended up producing 3,123 troy ounces of gold. That's about 88.5 kg. That's almost 5.5 million $. One heck of a pay day ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ต๐ต๐ต๐ต
Imagine the feeling of digging out on of those bad boys! I really can't say, all I have stumbled upon when digging is trash and dog poo ๐
