I'm from Venezuela, and every December 31st we have some traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. They are beautiful traditions that, despite the economic and social crisis we've been going through, we've tried to keep alive all these years.
As we await the New Year, we plan a dinner and gather with family. Grapes and tangerines are essential on the table. With the grapes, we perform a ritual just seconds before the end of the old year: we eat 12 grapes, one with each chime of the clock, to announce the New Year. Each grape represents a wish we hope to achieve in the coming year. The tangerines, when on the table, symbolize prosperity, abundance, and well-being, and by tasting them, we attract these qualities into our lives in the year that is beginning.
When the New Year is announced, we all hug each other—family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, pets—and wish each other these words of blessing:
A happy year full of life, health, and prosperity.
Other common phrases for welcoming the New Year include these words of blessing:
