One thing that Hollywood doesn’t seem able to do is successful adaptation of popular video games. One of the exceptions to that is provided by Resident Evil, film series based on the popular survival horror video games. The first title in the series, made in 2002 and starring Milla Jovovich, has the plot that takes place in huge secret underground laboratory where the experiment by Umbrella Corporation went horribly wrong, resulting in a release of virus that turns its victims into blood-thirsty zombies. Jovovich plays security agent who temporarily lost memory and who joins group of elite mercenaries trying to investigate the laboratory. The film is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, Jovovich’s future husband who shows great skill in discovering her potential of kick-ass action heroine. There are some deliciously “trashy” moments that turn this film into gulity pleasure, but there are also moments that show lack of inspiration and talent, indicating that Resident Evil could have been much better.
