In mid 1990s Sandra Bullock established herself as one of Hollywood's leading stars. This was mostly due to her successful performances in romantic comedies. Many expected Bullock to seriously compete with the likes of Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts. By the end of decade, Bullock's filmography was burdened with a series of commercial failures. One of those was Forces of Nature, 1999 romantic comedy directed by Bronwen Hughes.
Protagonist of the film is Ben Holmes (played by Ben Affleck), book jacket blurbs writer from New York. He travels to Savannah in order to marry his fiancee Bridget (played by Maura Tierney). When the plane he had boarded fails to take off, one of his co-passengers, young and attractive Sarah Lewis (played by Sandra Bullock) quickly arranges alternative modes of transportation. Sarah, who travels to Savannah on business, agrees to accompany Ben on his trip. But their voyage is affected by bad weather and all sort of problems. Ben, while desperately attempting to come to the wedding on time, realises that he feels attracted to Sarah.
Marc's Lawrence script for Forces of Nature at times treats institution of marriage in mildly subversive way. However, those moments of acidic wit are rare and for the most part this film is not particularly funny or entertaining. The plot is, of course, predictable. But the greatest problem for Forces of Nature is poor casting. Bullock, in a desperate attempt to distance herself from the "girl next door" image that has helped her in the earlier films, goes too far and appears in this film as anorexic, tattooed woman who couldn't attract anyone except those who have "heroin chic" aesthetic preferences. Ben Affleck, an actor who at times can deliver good performances, is terribly miscast for this kind of romantic comedy. Affleck and Bullock simply don't have any chemistry together. And without it, viewers soon lose any interest for this film that should be blown into oblivion.
