When a supermodel stars in a film early in her career, it is very likely that she was cast on the account of her looks rather than her acting ability. This might give some hints about how bad film will be, even more so if belongs to the genre of erotic thriller. One such example is provided by Two Shades of Blue, 1999 film directed by James D. Deck.
New Zealand model Rachel Hunter, best known for her Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover, plays Susan Price, a writer who became famous for writing steamy novels about Judith Anderson, woman who is seeking for ultimate sexual experience. Her life comes crashing down when she gets framed for the murder of her fiance, publishing mogul Jack Reynolds (played by Gary Busey). Determined to find the true killer, she goes underground and takes new identity. In order to get the information from district attorney Beth McDaniels (played by Marlee Matlin), who is deaf, she takes the job in phone centre for hearing impaired that gives her opportunity to listen to intimate conversations between McDaniels and her boyfriend Calvin Stasi (played by Eric Roberts).
Script for Two Shades of Blue was written by Ted Williams, partly inspired by his own experiences as phone operator in centre for hearing impaired. An interesting premise, which could have been used for Hitchockian thriller or exploration of voyeuristic impulses in modern society, is, however, wasted on rather routine erotic thriller. Rachel Hunter has the looks, but, predictably, doesn’t impress as an actress and that makes difficult to imagine her character as successful bestselling author. Gary Busey and Eric Roberts, familiar names to fans of 1990s low budget action films and thrillers, predictably overact in their roles. While it is nice to see Marlee Matlin, one of the rare actresses who became famous despite being deaf, appear back on screen, her presence does little to compensate generally poor script filled with annoying cliches and even worse direction by James D. Deck. Brief glimpses of nudity and similar exploitation content and occasional self-parodical moment aren’t reasons enough why should anyone waste time on this film.
