Hey guys, if you’re a very active reader in this community, then chances are that you’ve come across an article with a title just like this one a few days, and it was by someone else. Now you’re wondering why I’m writing about something someone else wrote about in just the past few days.

The article you might’ve seen was written by my friend here on hive by @omosefe, and in it, she talked about how bad the Ghana cedi is doing against the dollar. Truth be told, that is onw of the reasons I’m writing this myself, a citizen of Ghana, to share my piece on the matter.

I’m not much of a numbers or statistics person, so I won’t really go in depth into the stats or the numbers, just my take on how shitty the Ghanaian cedis and economy has gotten. And that is a lot if you were wondering.

We’ve always complained about things being hard in Ghana here over the past few years, but this year, this year is the hardest Ghanaian have seen. I believe just last year, the dollar was standing at around 8 ghana cedis. And just before this year ends, the dollar is doing almost a 100% of the Ghana Cedis. As we sit, 1$=14GHS. Yes, that’s absolutely right.

The average citizen can no longer afford 3 daily meals now because of how high the cost of living has become. Common sachet water that was 20pesewas(0.2GHS) last year IS NOW 50pesewas(0.5GHS). Everything has done almost a 100% increase.

The worst part is that the government under which things have gotten out of control promised the Ghanaian citizens that his administration has economists who can restore the Ghana Cedi back to its days of Glory. And mind you, the dollar was at 5.6 cedis in 2020. Ladies and Gentlemen, does an increment from 5.6 to 14 cedis as it is currently sound anything like glory?

This is even worse than I thought just sitting back and not watching the numbers. I guess we should’ve known better than to trust a politician’s word, right? You know is even worse than this which I thought was the worst? It’s that this current government has only served 2 years out of his 4-year term. You know what this means? Ghanaians still have 2 years of subjection under this shitty government. God have mercy on my country’s future.

Ghana is in debt up to its neck, so much it’s almost choking on it. Where haven’t we borrowed money from? And where has all that money gone? Into some claimed free Senior High School education. The same free senior high school a result of which we have countless high school graduates who can not read and write in English. Lol you know what, this is a topic for another day.

Citizens have been imposed upon, a tax on all electronic transactions they make. That is thousands if not millions of Ghana Cedis charged from citizens who are already battling a high standard of living. For what? So people in Higher positions get to fly out on rented jets on so called diplomatic meetings? Does out president even care? Did he pause to think how [his flight on a rented private jet that would cost Ghana £15,000 an hour] while there was a perfectly fine presidential jet would cost Ghana?

Not that I’ve come here to insult the leaders of my country, but man this is the shittiest Ghana has ever been. Damn. Anyways, knowing well that there will be an election in the next 2 years, that should be a call to sit up and do better (or not). Maybe this is the plan all along. Maybe the president has seen that the country has fallen so much into chaos that he just plans to enjoy his remaining years acting as the president, because he knows there’s no way in seven hells he’s winning an election again ever. Not in this Ghana. Not anywhere.

But whiles we talk about the bad and see all this as sad, others rejoice

Funny thing about how the world works, regardless of the situation, someone is always going to be smiling and another crying. In these very bad times, there are people taking full advantage of the situation of the situation. Those are people who have decided not to hold their money in Ghana Cedi (because why should you with everything going on?)

Instead, these groups of people convert all their money into dollars in hopes that the dollar continues increasing in value over the Ghana cedi so that they can make good money just holding their money in dollars. Smart won’t you agree? Why hold in Ghana cedi and risk depreciation when you could hold in dollar and profit from appreciation and inflation. Just by converting your money in Ghana Cedis to dollars last year, you would have almost twice your saving today if not more.

A few others like me who don’t have enough money to convert to dollar as a savings investment, do our best to earn in dollars and not Ghana Cedis. Everyone earning in Ghana cedis as we sit is fucked. The advantage of earning in Ghana cedi is the fact that you don’t really give two shits about whether the Ghana cedi is depreciating or not. Hell some people might even consider it good news.

Even if we could change a new government today, I’m not sure there’s any they would be able to do to help our situation. But we can hope that the next government is better than the current. For indeed, this one has shown Ghanaians what sheege really means.
