This is a plausible explanation of why crypto's price fluctuates in a certain pattern based on what I learned from this . Of course, a lot below is my imagination...
Assuming there are plenty of new people with cash at the side waiting to invest in cryptocurrencies (and we really care about their money coming in because that is how total market cap will rise), bitcoin is usually the choice of cryptocurrency people start their investing in.
This will first cause bitcoin price to rise. Very fast if there is FOMO and if news drives that.
Then after a while, depending on how the market moves, seeing alts starting to hike in price, some of these new coiners may change some bitcoin to Ethereum, and then into alt coins. That is how bitcoin may lose its dominance, while alts grow more.
But if there are some bad signs in the alts, these new coiners might either exit altogether or they move back bitcoin. Leaving alts to bleed.
In short, Bitcoin -> Big Caps -> Small Caps -> bye bye...
Then the cycle goes on and on...
