In 2019 Dash implemented ChainLocks, an innovation which keeps the chain proof-of-work, but uses staked masternodes to lock in the first-seen block and make it irreversible.

All Dash transactions are locked by InstantSend and irreversible instantly, and blocks are made permanent.

Our friends at Firo also use ChainLocks. Decred, Zano, and others have similar hybrid models, while eCash and Zcash are moving towards hybrids.

Over time, the hybrid model will become the gold standard for proof-of-work coins.
