I think leaving without punishment can influence others to do the same thing using the excuse. I know it's a cruel world and humanity is decreasing but it's not disappeared completely. I am sure there always exists someone to offer help at least for food. So rather than choose to be a thief, it's better to ask for help. It's not a shameful act like stealing.
