St. Patrick's Day had long been celebrated by Irish communities, with gatherings at local taverns a common tradition. However, it wasn't until March 17th, 1762 that the first official St. Patrick's Day parade was held.
That year, Irish soldiers serving in the British colonial army, as well as Irish immigrants living in the American colonies, came together in New York City to march proudly up and down Broadway. This public display of Irish pride and heritage marked a significant moment, as it was the first time such an organized parade had been held to honor the feast day of Ireland's patron saint.
