If we don't drink water, we die, simple. But also, by drinking inadequate water, we can also die! How important water is. That is why we usually associate water with life and health. So what are we doing to consume the best drinking water available to us? Please allow me to answer you.

Where we currently reside, our water service comes from a natural water source located in the surrounding mountainous area. It is stored in a nearby tank and then served to the community through pipes. Because that tank is much higher than the houses, the water comes with enough pressure that none of us have to use water pumps. This is a great advantage.

Still, since the tank is outdoors and exposed to the elements (and some people) it is not safe to consume it directly from the tap in our homes. In addition, the pipes are not cleaned either, and could release harmful residues. And in the rainy season the water that arrives in the tank can come with mud, and then it arrives quite dirty to our homes. Because of all this, we need to have a system to consume it safely. Which ones do we use? At least two.

Ozone filter. It is electric, located in the kitchen. We have several years enjoying its benefits. It is simple, when there is good water pressure in the pipes and it is not crystal clear, then we turn on the purifier and ozone treated water comes out through it. It also has a filter inside that has to be washed from time to time.

There are some people who do not trust it very much. But the truth is that in its years it seemed novel, that's why many were sold, and they were at an accessible price, compared to other more known methods. I think it is a good time to investigate its efficacy, since it has been on the market long enough to review the results that have been obtained.

Water purification tablets. My wife has a friend who gives her this valuable product as a gift. It consists of Troclosene sodium based tablets. The instructions say that one tablet is good for up to 25 liters of water. After half an hour it is ready for consumption.

I think this method is very important even in case of natural disasters or emergencies. It is known that when these events hit a specific area, the need for drinking water is one of the priority things that the authorities usually seek to provide to the victims. Having a few tablets of this type at such critical moments can literally save our lives. We can try to get an adequate supply ourselves while humanitarian aid arrives.

Other methods. We have also used in the past drops of chlorine for our drinking water. It is approximately two drops per liter of water. This method is also simple and inexpensive, although some professionals do not recommend it if you have orthodontic work on your teeth, since chlorine can damage the materials in your mouth when used for even a short time.

Also, we have boiled water. It is one of the best known, although several people do not recommend it (among them, water filter sellers, and it is no coincidence) in view of the fact that they assure that along with the harmfulness of the water, it also kills the properties that our body needs. In addition, it also implies a considerable use of domestic gas, complicating the families that do not have this service in a stable way, either because of deficiencies in its service and distribution or because of the high costs.

Before finishing, I would like to mention a method that I have not tried yet, but it is also widely used in inhospitable places where basic services are scarce: water in glass containers exposed to the sun for twelve hours. I thought it sounded great, have you used it? Well, knowing this can also help us a lot in an extreme situation. So jot that suggestion down over there.

** In order for us to have clean and affordable water for a society of people, we must protect and safeguard the natural water sources we have, through good signage, conservation of the natural environment from man-made damage (such as logging and burning). Also, regular maintenance and cleaning must be done to the facilities that deliver the vital liquid to homes. We have little power over that. But what we can do is to study the method that works best for us, with what we have available (in money and resources) and make a plan so that the family participates, and that the responsibility does not remain with one member, but that even the children can learn something that can serve them for life.**

How would we protect something that our life depends on it? Well, this is how we should protect our water.
