It's not every day that I get to go to Guatemala's national theater dubbed Centro Cultural Miguel Angel Asturias in memory of Guatemalan poet, novelist, and diplomat, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1967.

He is burried in the famous Père-Lachaise cemetary in Paris. I actually had the opportunity of visiting his grave back in 2014 on a trip to France with my cousin.
The building itself is a work of art, designed by the amazing engineer Efraín Recinos, in my opinion, one of Guatemala's greatest artists.

Today I had the opportunity of being in charge of sound for a musical play titled Mija.
The story follows the lives of two women: Luisa and Gabriela. This narrative is based on the book by Evynne Hollens and Rebecca Tourino Collinsworth. Luisa leaves the United States to live in Guatemala, where she discovers she is pregnant, while Gabriela is a woman living in Oregon who wishes to start a new life.
The play is based on a true story, and actually both "Luisa" and "Gabriela" were present at the performance.
I was brought on by invitation of my personal friend Gaby Moreno, who wrote lyrics for some of the songs and was also in charge of casting last night's performance.

The English songs of the play was written by Portland-based singer-songwriter Anna Gilbert, another amazing artist.
We spent most of the day rehearsing on stage. The actors all polished their parts and places and I took notes on when each musical piece was supposed to come in.
All the music was prerecorded, so all I had to do is press play on cue. I would sometimes do fade outs depending on the timing of the performers. Not an incredibly difficult job to be honest, but one that had to be performed by someone and I wasn't going to turn down the opportunity to be a small part of this show.
Besides, I got to work with my friend who I'm incredibly proud of.
