Since months ago, I have a draft in my pending post... on a title that is passing to be a draft for different ideas on the subject: “Reflections on how chilhood could definite a future”
I admire the writers who are writing every day, I thought if I put the title there in my drafts it will push me more to write on that pending post. But the idea is more than a post. It touches my profession and my life.
So, today I decided to share a couple of ideas that I considere foundational to understand how childhood could define a future.
In my way to retaking ideas from my Bachelor’s learning
coursework (as we say in Spanish 'Ya llovió' 😂–it had already rain–, I recalled some pionners on the area of Psychology.
What names came to your mind? Freud for sure.
A question which came to my mind is to understand what happens with the brain and what we call neuroplasticity. Then two words pop up, shows up: NEUROPLASTICITY AND RESILIENCE.
The new conceptual ideas, not so new but basic concepts in my opinion, in order to understand chilhood and destiny: Neouroplasticity and resilience. In my Bachelor's years I have never heart about "resilience", even thought the concept was something alive in my gut since young age.

Let’s begin by Neuroplasticity:
What is neuroplasticity? It’s the Brain's ability to remodel itself.
Neuroplasticity is the brain's lifelong ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections and altering existing ones in response to learning, experience, or injury.
Is there evidence of 'physical' changes?Yes.
The evidence is overwhelmingly physical and measurable. We are not just talking about "changing your mind"; we are talking about physically altering the structure of the brain.
Changes in Gray Matter Density:
Using structural MRI scans, neuroscientists can physically see changes in brain volume. For example, famous studies on London taxi drivers showed that their posterior hippocampus (the area responsible for spatial navigation) physically grew larger and denser the longer they navigated the complex city streets.
Synaptic Pruning and Strengthening:
At a microscopic level, when a child learns a new word (psycholinguistics) or processes an emotion through drawing, the neurons involved "fire together." Physical chemical bonds between these neurons strengthen (synaptogenesis). Conversely, unused pathways are physically dismantled by the brain (synaptic pruning).
Cortical Remapping: If a person loses their sight, the physical "visual cortex" at the back of the brain does not just die; but it physically rewires itself to process touch and sound. A blind person reading Braille is physically using their visual cortex to "see" with their fingers.
- Resilience:
The System's Ability to Absorb Shock
Resilience is the psychological and biological capacity to adapt, cope, and bounce back in the face of adversity, trauma, or toxic stress. It is not a magical trait some people are born with; it is a dynamic, biological process.
Is there evidence of 'physical' changes?
Yes, resilience alters the body's stress-response systems at a cellular and chemical level.
Therefore, it can be measurated on three aspects: The HPA Axis and Cortisol, the amydala vs prefrontal cortex and the epigenetics.
The HPA Axis and Cortisol:
When a child faces chronic stress without support, their Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis becomes stuck in the "on" position, flooding the developing brain with toxic levels of cortisol.
Resilience-building interventions (like supportive therapy or a secure mentor) physically recalibrate this axis, bringing cortisol levels back to a healthy baseline.
The Amygdala vs. Prefrontal Cortex:
Trauma physically enlarges the amygdala (the brain's fear and threat-detection center), making it hyper-reactive. Resilience training physically strengthens the prefrontal cortex (the logical, regulating part of the brain), allowing it to physically inhibit and "calm down" the amygdala's false alarms.
Epigenetics (The Ultimate Physical Evidence):
This is the most groundbreaking field in this area. Epigenetics studies how behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way genes work. Trauma can leave physical "chemical markers" (methylation) on a person's DNA, turning on genes related to anxiety and depression. Remarkably, studies show that resilience, therapy, and enriched environments can physically remove or alter these markers, effectively turning off the genetic predisposition to stress.
