A reflection on architecture and power Is there any influence between power and government buildings?

On this day of April, with number 10, Thursday approaching the weekend, the HUMANITAS community has put on the table a topic, a topic that I did not want to overlook because I consider of increased importance and relevance in the dizzying days that happen on our planet. The topic in question is: A reflection on architecture and power Is there any influence between power and government buildings?

Undoubtedly, architecture in any of its expressions is an exercise of power, power over nature and over man and his living conditions, a power that can mutate from goodness to evil depending on who the person is and the purposes behind its use. Examples throughout the history of mankind have been countless, from churches, houses of powerful people, palaces, walls, these architectural works that trigger feelings of power that can range from sovereignty, oppression and man-nature interaction have mutated and transported to works of universal culture comprising all kinds of artistic manifestations and representations, from literature to cinema, through painting and even music.

If we put one of the buildings that most catch my attention and that I have had the opportunity to admire, I speak of The Capitol in Washington DC, from the first glance we notice the air of arrogant authority and imposing, but at the same time reflects us sobriety and determination very necessary in modern societies, not only imposes from its construction and materials, it is an example of how to convey through building materials an ideal of democracy and sovereignty.

Other buildings or constructions, more than creating spaces have the point of being delimiting, almost like policemen that prevent the passage to certain areas and places. In their walls is reflected the prohibition and the rigid authority without contemplation, while others on the contrary leave wide open and passable spaces favoring the circulation. The two sides of the coin can be seen in The Chinese Wall as a backbone that transits a territory, delimiting it, but at the same time creating a transit space. In historical films such as The Third Man, an oppressive and, to a certain extent, dark and uncertain atmosphere was achieved using this resource.

And if we continue in the direction of government buildings and fiction, dystopian cities and hyper-controlled worlds bring us to the city described by George Orwell in his incomparable masterpiece and bedside book for many, 1984. The ministries described in the novel as the Ministry of Truth are a reflection of a dictatorial and controlling system, which dehumanizes architecture turning it into a reflection of a surveillance society, where the value of the individual has been forgotten and mere existence is based on following the rules of an authoritarian government. The Ministry of Truth becomes a character from its dehuman architecture lacking a natural or organic contrast. Parenthesis in this part to mention another work with an architecture that simulates the same feelings, the case of Blade Runner and the use of pyramids as a structure of rigidity, dryness and staggered control.

A destruction of a government building is perhaps the most solid example of change in the qui pro quo state, a change of norms, laws, the end of an era and the fall of a system. The volatility of human expression.

Leaving behind government buildings we cannot fail to mention and pay full attention to religious buildings and architecture in general. We are talking about those great mosques or churches, those places where God comes closer to men or the desire for an unattainable immortality moves away from us. The very material of their construction, hard, solid, durable, immovable is an example of divine salvation and transcendence beyond time. Buildings that, like our soul, must and are destined to survive the passage of relentless time.

Architecture is a silent narrator of human history, of complex systems and of attitudes and aptitudes, a reflection of an era and a culture, an identifier of how human societies see themselves and the space that surrounds them, and at the same time a double-edged sword capable of liberating or enclosing us, not only physically but in any human dimension.
