I was going to publish something on the growing importance of blockchain technology as AI adoption grows, earlier, then got swamped with other activities, only to come back to the news that recently launched AI models from Anthropic is no longer accessible, globally.
For those who don't know, I'll directly quote the announcement below:
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Anthropic models will not be affected.
About 3 days ago, when Anthropic launched Fable 5 and Mythos 5, I referenced the event in an article discussing the pace at which AI is growing and if it was faster than we could keep up.
The move by the US government just solidified the conclusions I came to that yes, this technology is growing faster than individuals can adapt to on a professional and personal level and to take it a step higher, it is growing faster than the government can regulate.
To a lot of people, this conclusion is no news. I do recall people highlighting that the government would not be able to conveniently regulate AI, most times likening it to the difficulty they've faced trying to regulate crypto assets.
What are the reasons though?
We received the directive from the government today at 5:21pm (ET). The letter did not provide specific details of its national security concern. Our understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or “jailbreaking” Fable 5. We reviewed a demonstration of this specific technique being used to identify a small number of previously known, minor vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities all appear relatively simple, and we have found that other publicly-available models are able to discover them as well without requiring a bypass. — Full Report
What I found truly interesting is this bit:
In the weeks leading up to the launch of Fable, Anthropic worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours in total.
In the posted earlier article I referenced above on the launch event of Fable 5 and Mythos 5, I mentioned that a lot of people came to the conclusion that these new AI model was the closest thing to AGI, so it comes as no surprise that the US government would want to control that.
This to drive to the whole point of this article being that as AI tech grows, we need much of the value that comes with it to flow through open-source solutions with blockchain integration.
AGI isn't something that should be controlled by a single company nor government, as evident in this event, that's no good for global access. ASI definitely cannot be a private tech.
