Yoshua Bengio, one of the world's leading artificial intelligence experts, is urging the Canadian government to invest in a billion-dollar public supercomputer to keep and control private tech giants.Bengio, who is director of research at the Milan Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Montreal, says he has pitched the idea to the Canadian governments, but so far the response has been lukewarm. He says public agencies need this kind of supercomputing resource to have the digital power to monitor and regulate increasingly powerful AI systems developed by companies like Meta.
Bengio also warns of the potential dangers of AI becoming more intelligent than humans and escaping our control, creating new types of life that can roam the planet via robotics.
My View As someone who is fascinated by the possibilities and challenges of AI, I think Bengio's proposal deserves serious consideration. Artificial intelligence is not only a scientific and technological frontier, but also a social and ethical one. We must ensure that AI is used for good, not evil, and that it respects human values and rights.
I think Canada has a unique opportunity to be a leader in AI research and innovation, and AI governance and regulation. We have a strong AI community, a diverse and multicultural society, and a reputation as a peaceful and democratic country. Let's not let the private sector dominate the AI landscape, but rather support public and collective efforts to advance AI for the benefit of humanity.
