Right from when we were tender, we were told that people who lie will go to hellfire. At a tender age, our parents and elders condemn lying. When we talk about honesty, we think it is all about avoiding lies. Honesty is more than that; it means taking responsibility for your actions and being genuine. To be honest, nobody is perfect, but it is right that we admit our mistakes and take correctives. Being honest enough to say, "I made a mistake," and working towards being a better person.
Honesty helps in building strong and healthy relationships. Every relationship needs trust. When people know that you are reliable, they will also feel safe around you, knowing fully that you will not betray their trust. There is this fulfillment inside that you will not hide information from them.
There is nothing that gives me more joy than having people who always tell me the truth even when the truth hurts so much. Many times you will have disagreements with them for being honest with you, but deep down inside you, you know that they genuinely care for you. Okay, let's compare that with someone who constantly tells you what you want to hear, and down the line you discover that the person has been lying to you. For someone like me, it will be very hard for me to hurt such a person again.
When you are honest, you will develop self-respect. If you are someone that constantly lies or always pretends to be who you are not, you will see yourself always worried about keeping up with your stories. From one lie, you will find yourself telling another lie; before you know it, you are trapped in one thing that you could have avoided just by telling the truth.
Honesty does not mean that we should be rude to people or say anything that comes to our minds; we can still be truthful and still be respectful and kind. When someone asks for your opinion, we can tell them the truth in a gentle way. With honesty you earn yourself a reputation. People who constantly keep their words are trusted by friends, family, and colleagues. It is not easy to be honest, if I must say; there are times telling the truth will have consequences. There is one thing I get to find out about honesty: it helps you find out the truth on time, and you will be able to find the truth before it becomes bigger.
We should try our best not to practice honesty only when people are watching. True honesty simply means doing the right thing even when nobody is seeing you. Of a truth, honesty is very hard but is better than a comfortable lie. You also need to be the kind of person others can respect and trust.
