At a tender age most of us had a clear vision of what we wanted to be when we grew up. Some of us wanted to be lawyers, bankers, doctors, and nurses. The reason we wanted to go for these professions is because we love the way they dress or we want to save lives. Others want to be lawyers because we love their boldness and confidence. Many dream of becoming teachers, engineers, journalists, and so on.
At a tender age, our career dreams are usually simple; we don't think about the work pressure, salaries, qualifications, office politics, or whether we will continue with the career. Just by seeing someone, we are inspired, and we start admiring the profession. We keep telling ourselves that is what we would like to become when we grow up. As a child, my dream was inspired and influenced by my aunty. I grew up in a family where everyone admired nurses, doctors, and lawyers; to be honest, I didn't always imagine myself following the path. For some, they were inspired by characters they saw on television, like a teacher; some are inspired by celebrities.
Now, to reality: life happened, and things became complicated for me as I moved from primary school to secondary. I realized that choosing a career is beyond picking what we like; finance, opportunities, and so on can influence our decisions and our dreams. Few of us were lucky to follow their childhood dreams. They studied the course of their choice, and they were able to gain qualifications and find opportunities in their field of study, and they are doing the job that they admired since their childhood.
For some the story is a different one. During my childhood I so admired doctors, but look at me now; I ended up working in a media house. I know some people wanted to be doctors and lawyers, but they ended up working in banks. Perhaps you dream of becoming a banker or a teacher, but you see yourself doing business. That is how life works; every change doesn’t mean failure. Sometimes when we grow up, we get to realize that the dream we had when we were kids no longer represents who we are. What we see as enjoyment in our twenties may not be the same in our forties; as time passes by, we grow and discover more talent. There are some of us out there who didn’t choose the current work we are doing now, but an opportunity was available, and we grabbed it. You couldn’t continue because there was no support, perhaps due to the nature of our country, and you find yourself building a career in a different industry.
