I love a house with plants. In fact, I will go for a house with a garden any day, anytime.A garden adds so much: fresh air, a place to relax, a bit of nature to balance the indoors, maybe some flowers or even veggies. It's nice to have that little outdoor escape just outside one's door in the cool evening.

Look, fellows, there's just something special about a house with a garden! Where one can grow flowers, herbs, or veggies, have a cozy spot for morning coffee, or even host a little picnic right at home. Invite friends on weekends to come around and have tea, chat about the weekday's stress, office gossip, and plans for the year.

     Do I Like Plants?

Of course I love plants. While growing up with my grandmother, we had a little farmland and a garden in my compound. In our farm, we planted cassava, maize, yam, cocoyam, three-leaf yam, and some other things. But in our little garden, we planted red bell pepper, pumpkin, basil, ukazi, uziza (a native spice for soup), bitterleaf, and okra. Then we planted a mango tree, plantain, guava, banana, African cherry, and many other fruits that are all grown now.

What Do I Do To Take Care Of Them?

I keep my herbs like basil and veggies like pumpkin in direct sunlight daily. I water them early in the morning or late in the evening; that's if I didn't water them in the morning to reduce evaporation. For plants like basil and mint, I make sure to keep the soil slightly damp. For my veggie, if the top is looking dry, then I will water.

I pick herbs like basil, mint, or thyme regularly just to encourage new growth. As for my veggies, when they're ready, I pluck them out to avoid overripening, so it doesn't reduce production. For pests, I use neem oil spray. Sometimes I pour soapy water, but not on all plants. I do add cow dung as a mulch to the plants, dry leaves, and sometimes fertilizer.
