Before entering into the global market surrounding this topic, I would like to first analyze what I am seeing within my surroundings. I am living in the heart of the city
, the capital city of my state to be more precise. When it comes to things surrounding agriculture, it has always been an overlooked sector over here. Many are out here for the white collar jobs. The job market is shrinking, bad pay is becoming a center talk, and to worsen the matter, currency is no longer able to match with commodities.
The gap is very far, Naira has dropped in value in such a way even till date many still think it is just a dream. Ok, you can get back to bed, we will be waiting when you awake. No jokes here, you are in a real dream. As usual, when an economy begins to shrink, the primaries are always left to be most considered. Over the years, I have seen some improvement within my environment. Many are beginning to realize they have farming potential.
You can call it a side hustle or the sustainer itself. I have been doing a little touring this days within and outside the state. Looking within my local government, it seems many are now very much interested in agriculture. At least, even if it is not for commercial use. Anytime I am boarding a vehicle somewhere, I always like looking at the environment and something I have not been observing is manifesting. Everyone now wants to own a piece of planting. All the empty roadsides that were always desolate are now filled with plantations.

I couldn't help but just stop to laugh a little. Seeing agricultural activities near the road side was not a practice in our so-called city. You will have to enter into the remote path of the state to do that. I could remember even as I was growing up, my Dad used to drive us down to another local government for us to do some farming activity. City life is about looking advance and making money. I guess the reverse was always the case, we overspend over here, everything you need, you will have to go to the stores.
The high cost of transportation to and fro has made city dwellers maximize the little spaces available. I am saying that there is hardly a compound you won't find some agricultural practices right now. If you want to ask me, we have one, we are not joking with our vegetable farm. It is for our personal use anyway yet sometimes people opt in to get it out for sale when it seems too much for us to consume. My Dad is a lover of agriculture and he was very happy to tell me he will be doing some subsistence planting this year.
To be sincere with you, I don't like going to the farm, I have become so used to our assumed city life that I prefer to buy and buy. Adding to that, I tend to have little to no time to run around the farm. This is a fact with some added laziness to analyze further. At least our compound is spacious enough for me to have a little garden and check it out in the evening when I am done with all my hectic activities. Hmmm, not sure I will still do it.

I am expecting an abundant supply of food this year, first to consider is the signal that nature has given us. The rain has come very early and heavy enough. Ever since the first drop of that heavy rain in the ending week of last month I have seen an increased agricultural practice within my environment. Every place that is called land has been tilled. Wow! The city guys are getting back to the old ways. The fact remains, many have come to realize that survival is not on currency but rather on commodity.
It is something that is worth considering as it is a needed way to close the inflation gap. The idea of depending on food that is brought in from other states or remote parts of the state comes with added cost prices. The issue of bad, insecure, overtaxed and high transport cost is all segmented into it. Just as earlier said, the solution for food sufficiency is not actually more money; money is cheaper than goods. But rather more goods and to be more precise, goods produced within.
To conclude, let me add, I long to see how this year will end when it comes to prices of goods (food stuffs to be more precise). Should this current practice bring abundance and subsistence self dependence, I feel we are on the verge of declining the overall cost of living in the city. It os something I will be happy to see. Ok, now I have to be a part of this movement, it is time I set up a little garden, it is something I guess. We will talk of global next time.
